As you can see from the above posts, there is no inexpensive way to tow a bigger 5th wheel. Why don't you hold off on a bigger 5th wheel? When my third rug rat showed up, I had to sell my '66 Mustang that I owned all through college and graduate school. I still miss it, sold it in '86. But when you have a family, you have to have priorities.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I knew I had to go diesel but was hoping to get away with SRW. Looks like I'll be searching for a DRW.

What's the most you all would tow with a SRW? Just in case we find a lighter mid bunk 5th wheel.

I would limit the current SRW trucks at around 14,000lbs.

I think 16,000lbs is really pushing it with a SRW truck. It would be too much pin weight on the axle and tires imho.

Had a couple long bed trucks, never wanted another. Had 1 dually, what a pia! Have a great F350 SRW. Pulled 16K on 2 trips before I ordered a new F350 dually.

On paper the new 2020 GM 3500 SRWs look like they have similar specs to the 2019 DRW. If you really don't want a DRW I would investigate the 2020s a bit before committing that you need a DRW.

That said, I just bit the bullet and went with a 2019 DRW for my daily. I love it and have a hard time believing an SRW will feel as stable when towing heavy. I also kinda dig having a big unwieldily brute of a truck when when I'm driving around unloaded. The ride quality isn't all the different from my last 2500.

Well from someone who found a DRW to be PIA, and now orders a new DRW! Why because they feel far better towing that much weight.
The more you drive a DRW the smaller it gets.

No, not much difference in towing, that weight and length is not a bother. I needed the payload. Did not even squat enough to be a problem. I just knew I was over payload by over 1000#. I prefer too be well under all numbers so-- a requirement. After my wife listening to campfire chatter she insisted on ordering a 2019 or I'd have made a few more trips and ordered a 2020.

I had a 2012 F-450 that I would drive to the beach, resturants and grocery store because it had key pad entry to lock and unlock the doors. Means I did not take the keys and could leave them in the truck. Now I have a 2017 F-250 gasser that I drive to the same places. The F-450 was way easier to drive, park, make a u-turn, etc. then the F-250 short bed. The wide front track makes a big difference in day to day driving. (Some states u-turns are illegal and some states promote u-turns)

I like both trucks, the 2017 has push button start so I do not even take the key FOB out of the center console tray. The older F-450 had the old fashion key in the ignition so I still had to fumble with the key when I got into the truck with the key pad entry.

The 2020 trucks:

GM hit a homerun with the added capacity, cameras, diesel engine cooling, improved frame, and wheelbase increase.

Ram hit a homerun with interior, factory air suspension, and redesigned diesel engine.

Ford TBA, should be interesting.

Rough estimate for me is 12K GVWR. Using 20% for pin weight that's 2,400 lbs against most current 1-tons having about 3,400 payload. Leaves a comfortable margin for people, gear, and hitch in the truck.

I'm currently doing my homework after falling in love with a 35' unit with a 15K GVWR. Every picture the maker shows with a TV has a DRW pulling it. I've gone to the owner's forum and read multiple posts from people going from SRW to DRW and being very happy with how it feels now.

Makes pulling the trigger require more consideration.

Best regards,
Chris

I only towed a 5th wheel with a dually truck but my new wife says she could feel the difference from the passanger seat from her previous marriage where her ex towed with SRW truck. She said the dually truck does not feel move side to side like the SRW truck did.

But as with any towing situation, it depends on your tolerance to be uncomfortable.

Ford is bringing the big block gasser back, 7.3l. Should be over 500lb/ft.

The new 2020 GM 2500 and 3500's are now hitting the dealer lots. They are now bigger trucks as they have a over a 5" wheelbase increase. They are taller with a new 6.6 gas engine and a reworked 6.6 duramax diesel with increased capability.

I will go look at these trucks because I want to see how big they are. I might have to change my perception of SRW trucks if they add enough cargo capacity.
