Towing and License Requirements

Ran across this you tube video this morning and found it interesting:

It basically points out that your state may require you to have a class A license depending on the the weight of your TV and trailer. There is a link in the description section that shows the different state requirements. For example here in NM if the TV and Trailer GVWR combined exceeds 26K# we have to have a class E license (equivalent to class A for RV's).

Just thought I would throw that out there to help everyone stay ahead of the law.

I subscribe to his (Big Truck - Big RV) videos. Most of them are pretty good and worth watching.

He sure isn't! Nor to put the mods to them. But he does get asked what he does for a living because of it..

I checked out my state regulations and it looks like I'm good to go with a Class D. My total GVCWR for the truck and trailer is at 27,000 lb...but RV's seem to be excepted.

In California, I need a non-commercial Class A to tow my 18k fifth wheel. Probably only be an issue in an accident but I'll take the piece of mind and obviously the wife wants to do the right thing as always!

Towing and License Requirements

Anyone know the SD rule? I looked and couldn't find a definitive answer on any of the websites so I sent an email to SD Highway Patrol. No answer yet.

My combined GVWR 26,530.

SD doesn't require anything special.

I have pasted the Texas license requirements below. If I read them correctly, a pickup with a GVW of 10k and a camper with a GVW of 15k, combined GVW is 25k, only requires a Class C license. Am I reading this right?

Class A
Authorizes an individual to drive:
Single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more
A combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds

Class B
Authorizes an individual to drive:
Single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more
Single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or more that is towing a vehicle with a GVWR that does not exceed 10,000 pounds or a farm trailer with a GVWR that does not exceed 20,000 pounds
A bus with a seating capacity of 24 passengers or more including the driver

Class C
Authorizes an individual to drive:
Single vehicle or combination of vehicles that are not included in Class A or Class B
Single vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds towing a farm trailer with a GVWR that does not exceed 20,000 pounds
Designed to transport 23 or less passengers including the driver
Note: Vehicles rated for the transport of 16-23 passengers including the driver require a Class C CDL, unless exempt
An autocycle.

Class M
Authorizes an individual to drive a motorcycle or moped.

The SD commercial manual exempts Personal RVs from commercial license.

In Texas it is the maximum capacity of the two. A SD dually typically has a 14,000 lb max and most toy haulers are 15,000+ from factory but rate to 19,000+ SO that exceeds the threshold of 26,001 lbs as 14k + 19k = 33,000 lbs capacity so a class A non CDL is required. Just going thru this now.
