Are you talking about GM's 3.0 liter diesel? I haven't towed with that one but have towed a 6500 lb trailer with an MB 3.0 liter diesel and it had more than enough power. Got 16.5 MPG towing.

My sis has one and tows a small fiver. I have driven it a few times. Coupled with the 10-speed it is an awesome 1/2 ton powertrain. Great milage, smooth, lots of torque, plenty of pulling power.

A 3.0 liter diesel in a half ton is a good combination. You can't beat the fuel economy. Unfortunately you can only get one in a GM or RAM. Ford had one but got rid of it recently.

I'm not sure how unfortunate it is. both of those are great trucks. the gm will have a little more cargo capacity. there are not many out there to be found tho.

i just talked to a friend of mine that has a Chevy with the 3.0 diesel. he tows a 30' T/T that he said weighs around 7000. he said it gets around 15mpg towing and close to 30mpg empty. he said it has plenty of power and never lacked any going up mountian passes.

And the oil pump on that 3.0L GM diesel is driven by...... ta da..... a rubber V belt, and is located in the rear of the crankcase (belt runs wet in oil). Belt is rated for 150K mi. I'm curious to see how long they actually will last..... replacement requires removing the transmission...............

GM testing labs have been trying to kill that belt without success. They're showing no wear at 150k miles, so there is talk on the GM 3.0l Duramax forums about GM bumping the service interval out to 200k miles. You just need to back the transmission off about 4 inches to service the belt (yes, I have a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 with this engine. It's fantastic).

If you want one it most likely will be used as GM is halting 3.0 production through 2021.

I had a Grand Cherokee with the 3.0L V6 Ecodiesel (260 hp, 480 lb-ft), and it towed about 9,000 lb combination weight (SUV plus boat) easily, doing 60-65 mph up long hills on cruise. It had a 7200 lb tow rating, and usually got just over 30 mpg highway with no trailer, and 18-19 mpg towing the boat. This pic was taken after getting back from Toronto.

My 10,000 lb loaded for travel Sprinter (188 hp, 325 lb-ft) gets about 18 mpg, also with a V6 diesel, but I don't tow anything with it.

The Duramax looks like a winner for a 1/2 ton. I hope for the sake of others that it goes back into production soon.
