I am shopping for a new truck and have noticed the tow rating on the 2007 Toyota Tundra. The Double cab long box can tow 10,500 lbs. Does anyone know if it will tow a 5th wheel? I have been unable to find any forum where it is in use for a 5ver. I visited a dealer and asked that question and was told "yes it tows", but couldn't get a straight answer from a saleman on whether it will tow 5th's. I have never seen any advertisements showing a Tundra towing a 5th wheel of any size.
I realisze that the tundra is only a 1/2 ton and I have been told time and again to only buy a 3/4 ton or above. The non-towing fuel mileage figures are what is attractive. I have also heard of the engine problems on the 5.7 L engine, which I have been told have been resolved.
Has anyone on the board had any experience with this truck, and what are your mpg real world figures when towing?

Never take a dealers word on towing capabilities.

There may some info in the owners manual, and I would think that Toyota has published towing guides/limits.

Always see it in writing as to towing limits.

What's the Tundra's GVWR? Chances are that's where you'll come up short in a 5th wheel application since the 5th wheel transfers ~20% or more of its loaded weight to the truck as pin weight. Typically, 1/2 ton or SRW trucks exceed their GVWR long before they approach a fictitious "manufacturer's trailer tow rating" which is typically based on a stripped base truck with only a 150 lb driver.

Whoa there, the Tundra is hardly a "boy" in fact in the truck tests they have a hard time placing it in the 1/2T catagory since it has almost as much payload capacity as a 3/4T, not to mention the tow rating. They are full sized trucks just a big as my Chevy.

All mfgs determine tow ratings in a similar way - they take the GCWR (based on the drivetrain) and subtract the curb wt and 150lbs of a basic truck. Which is why things like 4WD decrease tow ratings. As of late, most mfgs started showing seperate ratings for 5th wheels due to the fact that 5th wheels carry 15-20% of their wt on the pin vs 10-15% for TTs. Therefore it is easier to exceed the rear axle wt rating. It is also recommend that you have a 6.5" minimium bed for a fifth wheel- most smaller crew cab trucks nowdays have beds that are much shorter.

"Will it tow a 5th wheel?" - I'm sure it would. It's a truck after all. But read RustyJC's reply closely. He's correct.

Here's the way I do it, personally I think it's the safest way. Find the GCWR & the GVWR for the Tundra. Subtract the GVWR from the GCWR. You would want to find a 5'er that puts no more than that much weight on the truck's 5th wheel hitch.

I looked on the toyota website. The GVWR for the CrewMax with 5.7L is 7,000 lbs (2X4) and 7,200 lbs (4X4). I couldn't find the GCWR.

The next thing is the bed size. Make sure the bed is big enough as is stated above.
