WDH problems?

I recently purchased a Curt 17222 WDH with sway control.

My concern is that the head does not fit properly to the shank. There is a big gap between the parts and even after torquing the bolts to 200 foot pounds there is still a gap.

Is this normal or should the two parts be clamped tightly together?

Below are 2 pictures. One is not torqued and the other is. In the torqued pic the bolt can still be seen between the two parts.

Might be a nice size burr under there keeping it from closing all the way.

I checked and the parts are cut clean with no burs or any other obstructions.

The problem is that the 200 foot pounds of torque I put on the bolts is used to draw the 1/2" steel parts together and no torque is left for actually clamping the parts together. Also, after torquing the parts, they touch only a small bit at the front of the shank since the head side plates had to move so much.

This is my first time dealing with a WDH, but I wouldn't think I should have any play or free movement in this area once the parts are assembled.

Below is another pic. That's a fairly large gap to close by bending the 1/2" steel.

You might want to contact who you got it from. It may not be stamped out correctly. You need that to be a good tight fit.

I can't make much out by your pics. Are you certain you assembled it as per instructions and there are no waskers that should go between the parts where the gaps are? I haven't used a WDH in 6 years and really don't miss it.

I had same problem with my old hitch. I put some flat washers on one side of each bolt to take up the space, and then was able to properly torque the bolts.

I had a similar problem with a sloppy fit in the receiver. I had a machine shop build up the insert to fit right. You could do the same with your hitch.
