WDH questions, lots of em.

Good evening all, I will start this post by saying I’m completely new at the towing game. I am the fortunate sled driver of my wife and daughter’s new business. I know this is a forum primarily dedicated to the RV community, but I will be pulling a 28ft car hauler outfitted for a mobile business. I figured everyone here would be pretty knowledgeable and be able to answer the few questions I have.

I will be using a Ram 2500 diesel 6.7L V8 for the towing vehicle. I will be pulling a 28ft Continental trailer. I will be using a WDH, and here’s where the questions start flying. I don’t have the trailer yet it is still being built so one of the key pieces of information I need I don’t have at this time, but I can make an educated guess. My truck has a small lift kit, which raises my receiver height to 25 ¼ inches. At this time, I don’t have the coupler height, but looking at all the other continental trailers that are 8 ft wide, they say the coupler height is 20 inches, I am going to attempt to call the factory directly and get this info as the seller does not have it. Ball height will be the standard 3”. So, with these numbers, I believe I’m looking at a shank with at least a 9” drop, is this correct?

My next question is I am looking at the equalizer, which has their WDH listed for example 1,000 lb. maximum tongue weight and a 10,000 lb. maximum trailer weight. So, my trailers GVWR is 10,000Lbs, I don’t think we’ll get there, but I’m planning for the worst. The Equalizer I mentioned above can pull the trailer, but my concern is the tongue weight. Everything I’ve read and been told has been plan on 10-15% of GVWR of the trailer to be tongue weight, so I’m planning on 1500lbs, which is over this Equalizer’s max tongue rating, so do I plan for the 15% tongue weight with regards to the Equalizer WDH or just focus on the trailer weight, or make sure I stay inline with both numbers, which means I need to go to the 1,600 lb. maximum tongue weight and a massive 16,000 lb. maximum trailer weight?

And my final question, looking for feedback or general advice to help me make up my mind between the Anderson WDH or the Equalizer WDH. My only concern is that it doesn’t appear as if Anderson makes a drop shank that will cover the 9”, but I can always but that from somewhere else if I had to.

Thank you all for your time and sorry for the novel, happy pulling my friends.

Go with the Equal-i-zer 4 point 12,000 / 1200 weight distribution hitch and you can't go wrong.

Another vote for the equalizer, used 1 to pull a travel 12000# trailer with a Dodge 3500 SRW never got any sway and easy to hook up

I like my Equalizer but you definitely need the 12K model. I would also look at the Weigh Safe True Tow and the Gen-Y torsion hitch.
