I have a 17' TT weighing 2800 pounds, my TV tows 5k. It's an FJ Cruiser. I found a fast way E2 for 12 pounds for $150. Would that be over kill?

What is a "fast way E2"? I'm thinking your talking about a weight distribution hitch?

By 12 pounds I assume you meant 12,000 pounds gross trailer weight, or 1,200 pounds maximum tongue weight.

http://www.fastwaytrailer.com/shop/e2-hitch/

That might be too heavy-duty for your trailer, but it looks like an Equal-I-Zer. If it's adjustable the way an Equal-I-Zer is adjustable, then you can adjust the tension on the trunnion bars to exert only the tension you need for the actual tongue weight of your wet and loaded trailer.

My ProPride hitch is rated for 1,400 pounds max tongue weight, but the tension on the spring bars is adjustable so it tows my small TT with 650 pounds tongue weight with no problems.

I don't know if it's made by them but the design is similar so it should work well. My Equalizer sure did.

A 12 000# WDH is going to be way too stiff for your 2800# trailer. You need something with bars rated for about a 500-600# tongue weight.
