Who Makes Your Tires Chart
since one topic here is asking about specific brands and Walmart brand for example. In my opinion--an off brand made by Michelin sold at Walmart may be a hell of a lot cheaper. Anyways--here it is:

House brand tires are made to the specifications of the Company buying them and are not equal to the Retail tires made by the Manufacturer under their brand name.

This can be confirmed just by weighing retail/house brand tires of the exact same size/tread layout/aspect ratio to see how much material is missing (internally) in the house brands (less sidewall thickness, less woven layers all over and smaller diameter steel in the woven steel belts are just a few of the things that are different) and also by checking the tire ratings to see that the Treadwear Grade number and what letters (ABC) the Traction Grades/Temperature Grades are can can quickly find that they completely different due to lesser quality rubber/synthetics blends used in house brands versus what is used in a retail brands.

Store brands are made to specifications given by the store, and I'd be much surprised if there were exact duplicates of name-brand tires available under "store names" at discounted prices.

You can bet if they are cheaper, chances are they are not made the same. Usually the old saying holds true, you get what you pay for. My 2 cents.

I have been using the Canadian Tire brand tire for a lifetime in Canada and find them great for any applications. But in the same store I can see all brands and I will choose the house brand on price.

Way back when radial tires first hit the market, the only brand available was Michelin X. But soon after that Sears made a deal with Michelin to have Sears RoadHandler radial tires made by Michelin plants in the USA. The Roadhandler was identical to the Michelin X, and often you could buy them from Sears for a little less than buying the Michelin X brand from another source.

But that all went away when China entered the picture. If you are really into tires, you can find a table that will convert the DOT number on any tire sold in the USA to tell you the plant where the tire was made, and who owns that plant. Some Roadhandler tires are still made by Michelin in a plant somewhere in the USA, but some are made by other manufacturers in countries that have much lower labor costs.

I now buy real Michelin brand tires from Sam's Club or my local Michelin tire dealer, or in some cases TireRack.com. But back when I was broke and tried to save a buck when buying tires, I kept that DOT table with me when shopping for tires. A lot of store brand tires were made by Kelly, which is owned by Goodyear. But that doesn't mean a Kelly tire is equal to a Goodyear tire of the same type and size.

Having spent years in the private label business I would argue your wrong - same product that came off our production line had many labels and in most cases the famous ones had no better quality than the private label ones. In some cases the private label brands demanded quality that exceeded the name brand ones.

Which Tires are Made in the USA? PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A REPOST

The industrial world is increasingly the province of multinational corporations. The call to “Buy American” has been met with muddy results over the past decade as major automakers from almost every country involved in the production of automobiles build vehicles at plants located both inside and outside of the United States.

Tires are in a similar boat. Major players in the tire industry that are headquartered outside of the United States include Michelin, Continental, Yokohama and Bridgestone, but each of these companies also manufactures tires within American borders. Many of these U.S. soil tire plants were acquired as part of brand buyouts, such as Michelin’s purchase of Uniroyal-Goodrich and Bridgestone’s acquisition of Firestone. Even Yokohama has a plant in Virginia, giving an American dimension to its primarily Japanese operations.

The question is, which tires are made in the USA?

Homegrown tire makers Goodyear and Cooper are still operating extensive factories in the United States. These two conglomerates also own a number of sub-brands that are marketed as independent, including Dunlop and Kelly Springfield.

Companies which have yet to establish tire plants in the United States include Korean manufacturers Hankook, Nexen and Kumho, Japanese builders Falken, Federal, Toyo and Sumitomo (although partnered with Goodyear) and Taiwanese tire brands such as Nankang. Other extra-U.S. tire companies include hold-outs such as Pirelli (Italy) and Nokian (Finland).

Trying to pick apart the intricate web of corporate alliances and factory locations that dominate the tire industry is a difficult and confusing task. Fortunately, there is a relatively straight-forward way to tell where the tires you are considering buying were manufactured, thanks to the intervention of the U.S. Department of Transportation. All tires sold in the U.S. are required to display an alpha-numeric code that when broken down describes the place of origin of that specific set of rubber. The code starts with DOT and is then followed by eight letters and numbers, arranged in an XX XXX XXX pattern.

The first two letters represent the place of manufacture – for example, DOT AN XXX XXX identifies a tire built at B.F. Goodrich’s Alabama plant. A complete list of the tire codes associated with American production facilities can be found at the following link. It is also possible to look up specific tire manufacturer information on the NHTSA website.

Finding an American-made tire is no longer as simple as memorizing a list of U.S.-based manufacturers – the realities of the global economy have created a diaspora of tire production facilities around the world. If buying an American-made tire is important to you, then you will most likely have to look past brand names and use the DOT coding system to ensure that the tires you are interested in were actually built within U.S. borders.

You're a better web searcher than I am. I spent about an hour searching on the NHTSA website trying to find that database, to no avail. My list of DOT manufacturers is about 10 years old, so I was hoping to find a newer list. But the list has now grown from around 100 tire plants to over 800. That's too long a list to maintain, so I'll probably not print it out.

The modern way to check on a tire code to see who made the tire and where the plant is located is to save that database link to your smart phone or I-Pad and look up each code as needed. But my cell phone is not "smart" and I don't have a tablet of any sort, much less an I-Pad. Maybe I could talk Darling Wife into looking it up on her I-Phone?

As to the date of that list, note the fine print: "RE-VERIFIED 09/30/2010 - There were apparently a few code corrections, so all pages have all been updated!)"

The following is a post I made back in 2005, listing only the tire plants in the USA. It's probably still accurate as far as it goes:

Being the skeptic I am, what's to keep Chinese worker or floor manager from kissing his bosses' butt, by shorting a strengthening ingredient, and saving $.02 per tire?

Often when a company makes a product that is going to be sold by Wal-mart they know that they are going to get beaten down on the price that Wal-Mart will pay and so they produce a cheaper product. You will see that it uses a different UPC code or is re-branded with the Wal-Mart private label. I worked with many companies selling products to Wal-Mart and they all did this with some of their products.

For my part I want to support local businesses than pay a living wage to their employees and provide medical insurance. Wal-Mart does neither which is why more than 50% of their employees get government welfare assistance and their supervisors on day one tell them about all the government assistance programs for which they are eligible. Who wants to support that kind of company with their dollars - not me!
