Nothing new PW. Many tires are molded so that tread shapes and patterns change as they wear. Michelin winter tires had tread blocks splitting into more and more sipes as they wore.
Nokian has built in tread wear indicators that "pop up" as the tire wears.
Your tires are starting to dry rot as I mentioned earlier.
