Roof Repair, Weekend Warrior SLC-3505

Hi All,

New to the forum and toy haulers. I couldn't find a similar problem via the search so I'm hoping for some help from someone that's been there done that....

We bought this from an acquaintance. We knew the roof was "spongy around the AC unit". Some of the ceiling is falling down. It's a 2001 so none of that was a surprise and we got it at a decent price. We do a LOT of dirt related activities so a really nice TH wasn't what we were after anyway.

Having said that, I took this unit to a shop to get a repair estimate. $15,000 They want to replace all sheeting, insulation, aluminum roofing etc. I've not been on top yet so I don't know how soft much of it is... We won't use the top so I don't much care if it's a bit soft as long as it doesn't leak and I can fix up the inside enough to look decent.

Has anyone been able to shore up the roof from the inside?

Any ideas of a product to recoat the roof to prevent future leaking? The former owner said he basically put "flex seal" on it.

I've also got a broken handle on the rear vent/emergency exit on the roof. Can I get just the crank assy somewhere?

Other than the roof this unit seems to be pretty good. All appliances work like they should, the bedroom is nice, no sign of the drooping wall issue, etc. so I'd like to keep it, just can't justify putting that much cash into it.

Oh yeah, I need to find a way to extend the tongue a bit more. It's got a 5th wheel to goose neck conversion on it. Seems strong, just a food shorter than would be nice on my pickup. Any suggestions on that?

Thanks all!

Not knowing the length of the rig, $15K is a about the right price. Considering the replacement of roof sections, new roof material, labor cost.
There are other options, but for it to be done the right way, the soft spots will need to be repaired/replaced as needed.
In November we are having a sprayed-on roof completed for our 2018 rig. We do not have any areas that need repaired/replaced, the cost is still $10K or a little more.

If handy, you may be able to do the job, but once started, and if screwed up, I would bet the cost by a company will go higher.

AZExpert's current video, and most of his roof repair videos, are on Winnebago motorhomes that have a foam sandwich roof consisting of about 2" of foam, sandwiched between two layers of 1/8" Luan plywood with a thin layer of Filon fiberglass glued to the top layer of Luan. There are very few cross-members.

My understanding is that this construction is unique to Winnebagos. Your situation will depend greatly on how your roof is constructed.

I found this thread on another forum that deals with a roof problem on a 2007 3505 (starting at post #4). It looks like a messy but doable job. I'd adopt AZExpert's method for shoring up the roof during repairs:

Good luck.

Thanks for the tips all! I have been watching the AZexpert vids. Very helpful...

The good news is that the floor seems to be good, non of the sagging others have talked about near the fenders either. Everything works as it should.

I've built my own house so it looks like a doable project with a few new tools (gotta love an excuse for more nail guns!). As a Covid Long Hauler I'm not sure I can physically pull off what looks like a month long project though. Gonna have to think about this.

Anyone want a deal on a MOSTLY good hauler?

thanks again
