Really? I may want to re-think my trip to Los Angeles. I try to stay under 65, and was planning on coming back up the coast, but going slow ("speeding" at 60) all the way down would be horrible.

What speed do the tractor trailers go? That is the speed I would try to match. If they are going 55 - 58 mph that is what I would go.

In the eastern states tractor trailers do 70 - 72mph most of the time.

Probably good advice. They may have better information on where cops enforce the speed limit too. Although I would guess if a cop had a choice of who to pull over . . ..

I drove the speed limits with the tractor trailers and they were running about 65 all through southern CA.

Central California, 99 and 5, the tractor trailers do 62. That’s where I stay when towing.

back to the OP, A WD would help some, but can't totally compensate for a poorly loaded trailer or TV cargo bed. the trailer's load was probably mostly in the front end. Add that mess to speed and you have a ticket straight to Hades.

This thread caused me to take a more strict approach to my 65 mph limit, where on occasion I would exceed that by maybe 3 mph. This time most of the time I tried to stay 63 or under.

What's surprising is that it really doesn't seem to impact arrival times. We were travelling about 120 miles. Typically Google Maps is relatively accurate with arrival time when I go up to 70 not towing. I think I only lost about 5 minutes going the slower speed.
