Adding Electrical Plug
Hi All,
I recently took down the over hood light and fan above my stove top. We never use the inside stove or oven (use the oven for storage). I have 2 sets of wires coming out that one went to the fan and the other the light. I want to expand the hole they feed thru and add an additional outlet. I assume I can do that without any issues. Anybody have an experience doing that? Also I assume I can purchase any household outlet to install? We only have 1 outlet in the kitchen area and it would be really nice to have 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Check the voltage on the range hood wires. Most I have seen are run from the coach 12vdc.

If they are yellow, another color and each indipendent, its most likely 12 volt wiring.
Standard 120 volt wiring is typically 2 wires, black and white, and a bare ground conductor in a jacket. Like this.

sure, if it's standard 120v 3-wire... just add and run to any standard household receptacle.
note: if these only originally ran the light and fan when you were plugged in or on generator, then they are 120v. If they operated anytime, even when just on battery power, then they are only 12v, of course.
If you have an inverter, it could confuse that scenario... turn the inverter off if you are not plugged in or have the generator running and see if they still operate. If so - 12v.

I added a duplex plug in ours. Wasn't much of an issue. Bought some wire at Home Depot and a plug with cover.
Had to attached to the 1/4" luan. Got one with the spring bars that clamp on the backside. They are the small blue ones.
More than likely they are 12V DC though.

As noted, I suspect the light and fan are 12V DC not 120V AC. If you microwave, there is likely a 120V AC outlet near buy in a cabinet near the microwave you can work from. Perhaps snake down the wall and install an outlet below where the microwave receptacle is located.

Most duplex installed for the micro in trailers are single type, same as the reefer. Would be easier to change it and wire for both sockets, if it's close enough to use.
Keep in mind the total amp draw for that circuit.

Thanks for the responses. I never thought about it being only 12v which it is. I do have a microwave right above it so I might just piggy back off that. Didn't think about that. I thought about just changing my current plug to a duplex but I tiled around the single plug and really don't want to tear up tile to add it. Might try using the microwave plug first. On the wires coming out currently do I just cap and tape them and stuff them back up the hole and forget about them? Not sure if tracking them all the back to disconnect them will be possible.
Thanks

That should work fine for low voltage wires. You will probably find some "tails" under the dash or in other places for unused circuits that the manufacturer did just that. To be safe pull the fuse to the vent hood if that's all it powers.

RV Range hood normally 12 volt. But if it's 120 volt then GO 4 IT.
