Are 2 trailer batteries necessary?

Our TT came with 2 batteries. Due to health reasons we always camp with hookups for my oxygen concentrator and CPAP. One of the batteries is dead and should be replaced, however maybe we can live with only one battery. The only loads on the battery will be the rv fridge running on propane when the TV is not running, and emergency braking power (which we hope to never need). Opinions on 1 vs 2 batteries?

You’ll be fine with one 12V. If they were 6V, you’d need two.

As long as you have shore power no batteries are "necessary" but it makes life easier to have at least one 12V.

Have you checked the water in the good battery?

You could always add a Honda 1000 or 2000 watt gen for emergency 120V power. One good 12V battery will work just fine.

You may want to look at how the pair of batteries were wired. Sometime the 2nd battery the positive and negative cable from the trailer are connected to one battery and the 2nd battery is connected to the first battery using inadequate wire. The 2nd battery doesn't get a good charge and is not being fully utilized.

The correct way would be to use large cables linking each batteries positive and negative posts. The trailer positive wire would be connect to one battery and the trailer negative wire would connect to the other battery. The cable size would be 4 AWG or thicker if not using an inverter.

FYI - if you even need to replace a battery buy a group 29/31 as it will be a lot better than a group 24 battery for not much more $$$. You may need a larger battery box but it will be worth it.

Batteries were load tested by RV repair shop when getting new nose jack. My fault for letting sit all winter without periodically charging. I made sure they were wired in parallel when I added a disconnect switch.

I might do the generator. Last summer had a power failure. Had enough batteries for oxygen but it was hard to sleep without the CPAP.

I run my CPAP off of 12 volt DC cable when using my trailer. You may want to see if that is an option. I have a Philips Respironics Bipap AutoSV and they sell a cable that plugs into 12 volt DC.
