It probably depends on life situations, means, and geography.

I'm 45, have 3 kids and a career, but I'm also able to travel 8 weeks a year (not concurrently, but stretches of up to 4 weeks). I also live in SoCal so the desert, mountains, the Mojave Road...all those are accessible, as is Baja.

I don't think age has anything to do with it. I've met plenty of 20 year olds who won't go to the mall by themselves, let alone go wandering in the desert. I've also met plenty of 70 year olds boondocking and exploring trails that exhausted me. I did a 4 day hike on the Inca Trail with a 78 year old from GB. That guy was tough as nails.

Actually, I think something like this little guy makes a lot more sense:

The suspension is not all that great, simple trailing arm setup. Could be a bitch when backing up into a rock or log.

Still a lot better than the land yachts we usually sport. Interior doesn't look to bad.

I'd go with something like this if I didn't have a wife and 3 large dogs. Would suit me fine.

Also - Keep in mind that Australia doesn't have much in the way of hills. So they can get away with some rather overloaded sounding weights and their Toyota and Nissans have diesels in them.
