axle weight rating?

How can I determine the axle weight rating on my 2006 Gulf Stream Ameri-Lite 21MBLE?

I pulled my wheel hubs to check and repack bearings and inspect brakes.
I determined that the bearings are in good shape but was missing the D-washers under the castle nut. I measured the spindle and nut and determined the I.D. of the washers were 1". I found them at a local RV service shop.

I thought while I was at it I should replace the inner grease seals and inquired about them. They wanted to know what the axle rating was?
They showed me ones for a 3500 Lb. axle that were to big and ones for a 2000 lb. axle that the O.D. looked right at slightly less than 2" but the I.D. looked too big at 1 1/4". I thought the I.D. should match the bearing I.D. at 1 1/16".
I don't know the axle weight rating and can't find in specs or internet search.

I know: the dry weight is 3215 lbs.
Axle dimension is 1 3/4"
Hub is 8"
Spindle/bearing is 1 1/16"
Spindle nut/washer I.D. is 1"
Any info. or help to determine the axle weight rating would be appreciated.
I can't find any labels on axles.

Axles will have a sticker on them, identifying what they are. The age of yours though, that sticker may not be there anymore. It's worth a look though.

You've probably already looked and found that it wasn't there but, the Gulfstream website states that there is/was a label on the front left exterior wall of the trailer. It would show the GAWRs.

I took another look and discovered that the grease seals don't seal on the spindle but on the axle at 1 1/2" I.D. so I believe the RV shop did have those in stock.
I would still like to know the axle weight rating?

Thank you Mudfrog. Just saw you reply. I had forgotten about that sticker and yes it is still there. GAWR is 2000 lb. per axle, tandem axle.
Appreciate the help.

Some times the trailer mfg (rv and non rv) will/can derate the axle mfg rating number for various reasons ie; using lower rated tires....wheels....spring pack...or a lower number for excise taxes....customer requests/etc.
Its best to use the trailer mfg axle rating for these reasons.

Older trailer axles most of the time came with a metal tag around the axle tube with their own gawr number....or the trailer mfg requests.

Great that you found the sticker. Axle bearings and seals have numbers made into or on them. Best to pull them off and take them to a NAPA or whatever. The seal numbers are often so tiny you need a magnifying glass to see them but the bearing numbers are easier to see. Doing that will save possible multiple trips to the parts store.
The axles may have been replaced over the years.

I answered this in an other thread, Dexter shows in their catalog that axles from 600 lb to but NOT including 3000 lb, do NOT use a washer under the axle nut. The exception is if the nut is a plain nut and locked with a metal clip. Castellated nut versions don't have the washer.

Click on the image, it will enlarge enough to read it. Bearing chart by axle weight rating, gleaned from the Dexter catalog.

If you cannot get the axle together with D-washer it is possible that if the bearing races or cups were replaced and not properly seated. This can cause the problem of not having enough room for the d washer and also the seal not being on the seal surface.

What am I missing? The decal on my TT says 7400 GVRW, the axle rating says 3500 lbs.

2 axles @ 3500 each is 7000, seems to me I'm 400 lbs. short from the get go.

Here's what i was missing.

"It is common for RV trailer manufacturers to provide a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) higher than the combined gross axle weight rating (GAWR). This is because some of the weight will be tongue weight and applied to the tow vehicle hitch."

I have determined that I have the D-20 2000 lb. Dexter axles, actually rated at 1000-2200 lbs. which just covers the GVWR of 4340 lbs.
These axles do show the spindles with out the D-washer, with a castle nut and cotter pin or with the D-washer and a jam nut with a spring clip.
I will use the nut and spring clip since I already purchased them.
