Battery Help PLEASE!!!!!

I bought an older camper (Shasta 2100 Revere - 1985) from someone I know. I know it needs work but my FIRST question is - What kind of battery do I need to get? It had an old marine battery when I got it. The owner told me it worked pretty good when they had it out last - that was 5 years ago - but it was an old battery that the previous owner had put on so they didn't have to buy one right away. It will no longer take a charge. I have heard that golf cart batteries or deep cycle marine batteries are best. Other sites tell me to put the same kind of battery back on that was on it. I am on a very limited budget and plugged into shoreline all the time right now. The camper is in my back yard while I work on it. I would just like to be able to use the lights without putting lamps all through it. Any suggestions?

A 5 year old wet cell battery was pretty much toast 2 years ago.

What to use for a battery bank is a complex subject starting with what will your needs be. Best to do a search on threads. There are more than enough of them & get yourself educated up on them. It is not like going to the local Pep Boys & telling them your year & model car at all.

Go to Wally World and just get a size 24 deep cycle marine battery. You can worry about something bigger when you are ready to boondock in the trailer.

Do you need a battery?

"(Shasta 2100 Revere - 1985)"

The Shasta is an old one, so what I am going to propose may not work.
You may not need a battery. My 15 year old Alpine Chalet had a converter/charger. It would supply 12 volt power when camper was plugged in. It did not require a battery at all. The Shasta may be the same.
Get make and model number of your built in charger. Do a Google search on those numbers. You may find an owners manual. If it is a converter/charger, the "converter" part will supply 12 volts for lights without a battery.
Otherwise, as posted above, any house battery will work for now.
I wish you good luck and happy trails ahead.

I agree with this response. And if your battery box has room you may want to put in 2 of them. But for a start just go with a deep cycle size 24 battery.

you are plugged in all the time now and all you want is lights. go to the local junkyard and buy a used battery. if your trailer doesn't have a built in charger or if not working buy a cheap trickle charger ( harbor freight )
When you are ready to use the unit you can decide what you will really need for a battery system and start out with new, fresh batteries.

Disconnect the old battery and plug the trailer power cord in.

If the lights work, your good to go until you want to travel.
