It is actually a car alternator of 140 amps that I have tied to a 5 horsepower Honda motor. Fairly quiet and will really charge the batteries in a matter of about 3 to 4 hours. And it only sips fuel the tank that's on that thing is just a tad over a pint and will run for good for and a half hours. Yes I use it for other things as well, it has been known to start diesel rigs as well as charge them true. It has been known to be in a field starting and charging farm tractors and a couple of times a 988 Cat front end loader. What's not expensive because I bought the motor at an auction it was on an old power washer. If you're interested in something like that you could use the conversion kits that are sold by epicenter.com. they have been great to me. I did make a few other modifications that works very well. That being said you could buy a regular generator but I find this alternator will charge the batteries quicker. Hope that helps
