I've had single axle trailers for the last 16 years, because I like small trailers for boondocking. They don't make really small trailers with dual axles. Plus I need a very small (12 foot!) trailer that can fit on my driveway.

Having said that, I believe a dual axle is much safer in case of a blowout. And it probably tows better, too.

But life is a series of compromises. So I have to settle for single axle. I watch my tire inflation and tire wear very closely due to the increased risk of blowout damage.

All good suggestions above!

I have the same question. I have not come across a professional analysis. So I only have my own imagination to work with. Here is my analysis.

Designing axles for a 5000 # TT provides options.
Two small 3000 # axles cost more than one larger 5000 # axle.
Wheels and tires for 3000 # axles can be smaller diameter since each caries a smaller load.
Smaller tires means TT floor is closer to the ground. Steps are shorter, but ground clearance is less. Less is not as good for boondocking. Low floor scrapes high spots on the ground and can high center. Pot holes and rocks leave second axle hanging and overloaded briefly.
Less roof height means less likely to hit overhead objects and a little less wind resistance.
Dual axles have high stress when turning the TT sharply like when backing into a tight spots. Tires "scrub" and stretch to make the turn. Wheels stress the lug bolts and hubs a lot.
Wheels on single axle just turn. Scrubbing is limited to the tread in contact with the pavement. Less likely to break a hub or axle suspension parts.

Both of my single axle trailers shake up cargo violently during a tow of any length.

Good luck and happy trails ahead!
