Frustrating day at RV dealer

Late last summer my wife was out in our 2018 travel trailer. She said I think the floor has a soft spot. I couldn't go and investigate because I had just had double knee replacement. Finally after a couple of months of recovering I was able to get up into the trailer to see what was going on. Sure enough a section of floor tile approximately 2ft by 3ft was a little spongey. Fast foward to today. We take it to the rv dealer for an estimate. Oh boy! After they got done looking at it and we got our estimate, it is going to be $20,000 just in labor. Still waiting on price for parts. They said that it was leaking on both sides of the slide and also around the awning brackets. Sounds to me like bad craftsmanship from the manufacturer. I have done yearly inspections on the roof and kept an eye on things, but what a shocking surprise. Now what to do?

Will your insurance cover any of it?

I wouldn’t bother with that RV dealer. No way Jose. $20K for that repair is outrageous. That’s a DIY project of a few days. Try getting an estimate from an independent repair shop. If the estimate is over $5K, and you’re not fit enough to DIY, consider hiring a carpenter, or handy man. Depending on your sidewall type, you may have to remove inside walls to replace soaked insulation which will sag. If you have lam8nated foam sidewalls it will be easier. Stopping the slide leak can be as simple as replacing the gaskets, or as complex as replacing the slide floor and backing on the inside and adjusting the mechanism. If the inside doesn’t smell of mold, it probably indicates that the water intrusion hasn’t gone on very long. Replace all of the roof sealant, and check for tears or holes in the epdm. If you can DIY, cost of materials should be less than $1,000. Add another $3,500 to hire a competent person to do the work.

20K sounds like the "go away, I don't want to do this job" price. I'd be be careful of this dealer!

I agree with the “go away” sentiment but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should condemn the dealer. An incredibly successful businessman taught me to never say “no” to a customer if you can convince them to say “no” instead.

Sounds like the dealer knows that there is going to be more problems than just a spongy floor once they start ripping open things.

There are some really nice leftover 2022 travel trailers with discounts on sale right now… just sayin’

Update: made a trip to Indiana (Elkhart area) last week. Found a place that will do it for a fourth of the dealer quoted price. The place was recommended by the RV manufacturer, and has several excellent reviews. Also had other quotes in the same price range as the place I am taking it to. I guess the dealer just wants to do warranty work and nothing else in my humble opinion.

Which repair shop are you going to use? We use Affinity RV Group on Kercher Road.

Right now I'm leaning towards Allegiant rv group in Middlebury. Still waiting to get a quote back from Affinity.
