Give me the lowdown on Toy haulers...
My truck has finally been assigned a VIN (new production) and I'm in the process of searching for a TT. My neighbor has a Grand Design "toy hauler". From my understanding, the garage converts into a living area when parked...is that right? If so, is that a hassle? Does that affect quality of living area...IOW, with moving parts, does it feel solid? What about when you simply want to spend one night and not use your toy?
Anyway...just wondering on the real world pros and cons...
Thanks Guys.

My wife insisted on a toy hauler that had a garage with a bulkhead to separate it from the living area. She was concerned about odors from the bikes and equipment. That worked well for me. I made the garage into a man cave for those times when we were camping and the bikes were parked outside.

Are you talking 5th wheel or TT. If 5th wheel with a separate garage, the garage makes a great second bedroom with no hassle. If you are talking a smaller 5th wheel or TT where the toy actually hauls in the living area, I would think that would be a real pain. You would literally have to unload to make a sandwich. Most floor plans look like they would allow sleeping and bathroom access, but the living area would be full if a toy was loaded.

Depends on the toys and the toyhauler. I can have a Commander max in mine and the kitchen is still usable, and you can still get up the stairs tot he bathroom and bedroom. I’ve also had 3 quads in it and can still use the couch.

I'm talking about a TT a from about 25 -28ft long. I looked at the floorplans but haven't seen one in person yet. It looks like the garage converts to a living area. My wife thinks it would be a PIA.

From what I saw when I looked at them earlier this year, those in that range have a small garage area with bunks that either fold down from the sides OR come down from the top for extra sleeping area. they had a forward bedroom and the kitchen was mostly useable without having to unload.
that said, i was not impressed. each time I was in one, i felt like I was in the garage the whole time and it just didnt feel right. FWIW, i dont have any toys i would load into one so there is that mindset too...

You didn’t say anything about your truck, so I’ll point out that a toy hauler will have a heavier than normal tongue weight they’re designed to account for the weight of a heavy toy in the rear. So if your truck is a half ton and you’re not going to be putting much weight in the back of the trailer, you should probably not look at a toy hauler.
