I try to stay with the flow of traffic and not block anyone. I will do what the road and traffic support, and when it comes to posted speeds, I run the limit to +5.

Drive what ever speed your comfortable with.

Highways have multable or passing lanes for anybody who wants to go faster.

Don't get pressured to drive faster then the speed YOU want.

EXACTLY! Especially going down mountains. I go down at about 40 in the right lane.

I set speed control on 62 mpg in a 65 or 70 zone, and 55 in a 55. My 6.7l chugs along around 1500rpm and I get around 15mpg hauling the TT in my signature, 8600lbs loaded.

We have a 17,400 lbs 5th wheel and tow it with a 2016 F350 CC diesel dually. Cruise control normally set at 60 MPH in 6th gear, unless in rolling hills where I'll drop it down into 5th gear. At those speeds the exhaust brake will control speeds going downhill and the truck will climb most grades without downshifting. In the mountains, no cruise control and much more manual "drive the truck". The reason we use 60 MPH is that it's pretty much a sweet spot for the truck ... putting us (with our 3.73 gear ratio) at the truck's torque peak. We also have no trouble keeping our following distance safe. All of this is on multiple lane interstates. When on two lane roads, where 60 would impede traffic, I will bump it up to 65 as a courtesy. But 99% of the time we're locked on 60 in cruise.

Factor #1: what are my tires speed rated for. I take the lowest rated number from the TV and TT tires and subtract 5 mph as my max speed limit.
Factor #2: The speed limit.
Factor #3: Weather and road conditions.
Factor #4: Common sense when picking routes so I am not going to get plowed from behind by faster moving traffic.
Factor #5: A speed that isn't over working my TV's engine.

First the speed limit the trailer tires are rated at; speed limit; weather conditions; safe stopping distance; driver condition; or around 62-65 which ever is the lowest. We typically only driver about 4-6 hours per day and it does not matter much when we get to the next stop over point.

I always consider my first responsibility is to get my rig, passengers and me safely to our destination. If other traffic does not like it, well TS.

I tow a 2010 HHR and the GM info for towing states a maximum of 65mph. Most of the FMCA annual tow guides for the year you are towing will identify any manufacturer recommendations for your vehicle. Good luck,

Towing speed.

I thought all towable trailer speeds were a maximum of 65 but I found out that if your tires are G rated and hold 110 psi, you are not limited to 65. In my case with my F350, the rear tires are so noisy between 65 and 72 I drive at 60 on two lane highways, and 74 on the interstate. Anything in between will give me a serious headache. In my case with a 5th wheel, how level the 5er is might be the key. If it is not level and the front is 'higher', the weight transfers to the rear wheel/tires and places all of the load on them.....increases the chances for a blowout on the road. Do what you can to make sure the unit behind you is level horizontally. Travel safely.

I totally agree with the quote, but would add the speed rating of the tires is really important. Once you bump them off a curb, the tire could be weakened. I have 75 mph tires but 62-64 is the most comfortable speed for me. 6th gear, 1500 rpm, 11+mpg.

Not necessarily true. Check the speed rating for your particular tire. There are H tires running at 125 psi that are rated at 65. Anyway why push it. You are towing a recreation vehicle, so relax and tow at the speed you feel comfortable at, and not the max speed rating.

When on the interstate and those highways with 65+ speed limit, I set my cruise at 62. I've found that while I can do 65 (what my TT is rated for and the speed limit for TV and TT in most states) 62 consistently gives me the best gas mileage.

What the other guy said

I fall into the same bracket as most of the posts said. 62 mph on the highway seems to be the most comfortable for me. Maybe when I get a lot more experience it will go up.
