If you’re thinking about rewiring it after performing emergency surgery on the wires or whether you’re thinking about replacing it why not drop an in-line toggle switch on it before it goes hot. That way when it annoys you just cut the power off from the switch. Will also stop the trickle battery drain when not in use.

UPDATE:

Fuse wasn't blown.

While the service guy was here, he installed my new detector, and I saw that the light was on, which means the wire was still "live."

So then I asked if he would pull fuses while I watched the detector for the light to go off. That way, I will know which fuse rules this stupid detector so I can pull it if it goes off again for no reason.

He pulled them until we found the right one. He replace it with a red fuse--the only red fuse I have in in their.

Cost $60 and I'm good to go. Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread!

PS: Once he put it in, it didn't go off again. Definitely the off gases from the new rugs causing the old one to go off.
