New to the forum, and I have a question. We are buying a new Puma, Cayon Cat (28ft) TT from a dealer. They say the manufacturer supplies the lp tanks, 20lb ers. I think this is bs. The lp cover is sized for two 30lb tanks, that is what I feel they should supply. Anybody know if the lp tanks come from the manufacturer?

If you are buying a new unit, part of your negotiations should include 30 lb tanks. Hold firm on that. The dealer does not want to lose a sale over something like 20lbs vs 30 lbs. Especially if the cover fits 30 pounders.

You say it's BS but it's probably true. The dealer owes you nothing, however, like Tom said, if they wanna sell it, they'll take off the 20's and put on 30s.

The manufacturers brochure will list the propane tank size that is standard. The specs online list 20# propane bottles.

We agree. It is the manufacturer that supplies the tanks and they, Palomino, state "20 Lb. LP Bottle w/ Cover" on their web page description (click here) and in their brochure.

If you haven't already signed the contract and threaten the dealer to walk away from the sale, I'm sure they'd throw in the larger tanks. However, as said, they have no obligation to do so as it is in fact the manufacturer that supplies the tanks.

Also ask for a group 27 or better yet group 29 battery instead of the smallest group 24 battery.

You may want to rethink this. If you have 30# tanks, you have to find someplace to have them refilled. I have been places where that is a problem. With 20# tanks you can just swap them for full ones at Walmart, grocery stores, gas stations, etc. If you use a pickup as a tow vehicle, you can carry a 3rd 20# tank as a spare.

you got me thinking about comment the LP fill station guy said, think was a UHaul rental. Claimed if you buy a prefilled, such as Blue Rhino, etc., they dont fill them to a full 20# because they sit out in the sun all day on the outdoor racks. He also said the new tank with the TT is of higher quality and should try to hang on it. i would think a tank must meet a certain safety standard regardless but dont know if either of these statements are true

As far as quality, a cylinder is a cylinder rated for DOT use. It's the same.
I've never weighed one from a rack. Buy one and bring it to me, I'll weight it.

Here in Canada, they don't do an exchange program , unless your bottle is over dated, at 10 years from date of manufacture they have to be re-valved , re-certified and dated accordingly.
So if you travel into Canada with an older LP bottle, don't expect to get it refilled.

I think this was knocked down and they were told to fill the tanks. The 20# rating leaves the proper vapor space to meet the governing codes and the tanks are protected by a thermal/pressure relief device.

Basically, the suppliers were cheating you out of a few pounds on propane on each tank and making them bunches of money...there never was a safety issue.

You will also find that those "swap" tanks are not completely filled either and that makes them cost a LOT more than getting them filled. Around here the tanks only have a little over 3 gallons in them.
