New tow vehicle
So two months ago I traded in my 2010 F150 platinum max tow. It only got used for pulling the rv while I drove a small commuter car 90% of the time. My wife's rig was getting up there in miles and age and I didn't want a second car payment so we consolidated. I traded the pickup for a 17 Expedition EL XLT 4x4 with the ecoboost motor and 3.73 gears. I gotta say, this thing is a towing monster!
My 3 kids have plenty of room to stretch out now instead of sitting 3 across like in the pickup. It has the 202a package with heated and cooled leather, nav, backup camera, HD tow package with integrated brake controller etc. It gets better mileage than the pickup towing and not towing, and it hardly notices my 6200 pound trailer. It climbs hills without downshifting from 6th gear and will cruise at 70 while towing without issue uphill and down.
This ecoboost motor is a gem, and I've got a 100k mile powertrain warranty so I'll keep it till around that before upgrading. Anyone looking to haul the family in comfort and tow your trailer, and still fit in the garage, look at an ecoboost expedition! I did have to upgrade to a 4 point sway control hitch since the Expy has IRS and squats a lot without the wdh. I went with the husky centerline TS and with the bars (very) tight, the expedition only squats 1" in the rear and has zero lift in the front end.

Congrats on the vehicle. The Ecoboost are amazingly powerful engines. You probably had the 5.4 in the F150?

Anything besides the 5.4 is better. BTDT. Nice report. Thanks.

Good info, but not sure I would want to pay 60 to 70k for one.

Glad to hear good reports on the 6 banger ecoboost, but I just can't wrap my head around that engine being good long term for pulling big heavy loads. I love our 5.4L and it pulls our rig with ease. It's a V8 for me, next tow vehicle is diesel, Ford more than likely. Spoiled by a 7.3L I never should have sold.

Congratulations on your new vehicle! We have a 2016 F150 truck with eco boost and we were surprised at how effortlessly it pulls our travel trailer up and down the Colorado mountains.

Remember back when they first started with the fuel economy and anti smog stuff and how they predicted bad things? Now look at what we've got with these new engines! Isn't 3.5L something like 212 ci? Even my CR-V surprised me when I got on it hard and no turbo(s). I've seen 36.2 mpg too.

Don't sweat the Ecoboost lasting while towing heavy loads. Formula 1 race cars are 1.8 liter twin turbo V6s and put out nearly 1000 HP and due to the rules for engine changes they complete 4 races each including all the practice and qualifying for each event. Many thousands of miles under the worst conditions and failures are not common. Modern engines are pretty amazing.

My 10 F150 Max Tow was the 5.4 and it did a great job but doesn't compare to how effortlessly and quietly the eco pulls. I had a 12 F150 with the 5.0 and it was a gutless turd pulling my same trailer that the 5. 4 pulled with ease. Don't buy into the hype, the 5.4 is a far better tow motor than the 5.0 but only with the 6 speed transmission and 3.73 rear end. Just got back from a 450 mile round trip pulling the rv and averaged 14.4mpg (less climbing up to 7k+ ft and quite a bit more rolling down on the return trip). The only place the eco doesn't shine is engine braking, it has none. In 2nd gear I was still riding the brakes to keep from running down the mountain. My 5.4 would slow the load on its own easily when in 2nd gear with no brakes needed.

When I bought my '13 F150 I came to that same conclusion...the 5.0 would be glorious in a Mustang but not so much in a truck. My 5.4 was awesome for 8 years and 210000 miles (but nowhere near as good as the EB that replaced it)
