This is either electric gear or hydraulic. Both of which you can partially open/close without hurting anything.

We have the Schwinteck slides on our motorhome. We were careless a few times in following the rules about being level and opening and closing completely. We had a major fail at the start of our first trip to Florida. The lovely folks in the campground helped to manually push the slide in. We were also very lucky that we were able to sleep overnight at an RV shop in Orlando connected to our local RV shop. One of the guys normally at the beach was in Orlando and reset our slides with a stern warning about proper operation. I have never deviated from his instructions.
