Oven Door Explosion

Last week we went out andn upon arriving and opening up our trailer to set up, discovered that our tempered-glass oven door had not cracked.....not shattered......but EXPLODED!

It took over an hour for my DW and I to find and cleanup all the glass.

Gooogling the issue quickly revealed that this can occur (and does in occassion) with tempered glass if there is ever a small crack or defect. Has happened in home ovens and to my brother-in-law at ano office with tempered glass panels in the cube walls.

Contacted my service guys and said I was the third person to report this issue in the past few days. Other two were in Grand Design units but same brand of oven.

With this info in hand, dealer called manufacturer and made the case they either have a design problem or, more likely, a bad batch of tempered glass. Manufacturer is sending new doors for.all 3 of us.

Just an FYI if this happens to you. The really bad part is that that we camped for a week with NO homemade biscuits!

There must truly be a big issue for the manufacturer to replace the doors so quickly. My guess this is happening more then reported. Surprised there is not a TSB or recall on this.

This happened in my previous home. Brand new Viking range gets delivered and installed. The first time they open and upon closing the door the glass shattered in a million pieces.

That is pretty strange! So this exploded when the oven wasn't even on, right? You parked the trailer and then came back to find glass all over the place?

Usually, something like this might happen if the oven is on and then someone spills cold liquid onto the front of the hot oven.

Maybe a careless Baking Burglar crept into the trailer with a hankering for some biscuits?

Roads are 'smooooth', RVs float down the road, no bouncing/bucking/side dipping going on at all

Tempered glass is great until it gets small crack or defect during mfg.
And unlike Auto tempered glass for windshields...no thin film to hold it together so it turns into 1000's of pieces that find their way into little tiny places

Son't be surprised when you come across errand pieces later on

This is a known issue with tempered glass. Motion and/or use has little bearing on this happening.

Unfortunately, most people don't know the problem exists until it happens to them or someone they know.

Ive dealt with tempered glass for years. I have swapped out many door and window glass that got moisture in between them. We kept a dumpster just to get rid of the bad glass. After putting the old panels in the dumpster, I could sometimes beat it with a hammer and not get it to break. Other times, you could look at it funny and it would shatter.

I think everyone is missing the big issue, no biscuits for a week . OP, you have got to improve your skills and learn to make those biscuits on a grill.

Glad they sent you a new door and all is well.

Now that you mention it
We do biscuits on our CampChef. Baking rack on the griddle with an aluminum disposable pan over it. Works a treat.
