It was a self-inflicted malfunction. The ACME nut was a little difficult (no, not cross-threaded) to turn all the way. I ran across a roll of yellow Teflon tape designed for gas connections in a hardware store. Why not sez me. I read about it frequently as being recommended.
The spool had instructions to wind at least 4 full turns on the male connector so...I followed the instructions like a good boy. I noticed that by doing so I couldn't quite screw it in as far as when there was no tape on it.
Long story short the tape prevented the tip of the ACME nut from quite reaching the excess flow ball bearing valve preventing gas from flowing. Bye bye yellow tape.
