Rotten floor

My friend has a 2003 KZ Sportsmen Frontier 2303 trailer. He has asked me to have a look at it for him. Seems that the floor boards are rotten at the foot of the bed. He says he sees no leaks in the roof or inner wall damage, which usually occurs in these cases. Just the floor seems bad (real spongy)...He has started to tear it apart somewhat. Took up floor covering and some plywood. Under that is an inch or so of Styrofoam insulation and then a rubberish membrane. From what we can see, there is only one cross brace in this area. Looks like am going to install some cross braces and build from there. I havent gotten it over to my place yet, so no pics....will take some when it gets here.

Anyone aware of the construction of these floors? Any better ideas?

Sounds like the same "sandwich" or laminated construction used on many RVs for their roof and sidewalls? Just like cardboard, it works great until it gets wet. Then, it can be pretty difficult to repair.

That rubber membrane may have unintentionally prevented water from draining? Obviously a very important part of this repair is going to include finding and fixing the reason that allowed water in to start with. Is the water tank or any other plumbing under the bed?

If this problem is between the rig's frame rails, your idea of adding stringers between them and building a new floor on those is a good one. Depending on the damage and size of the affected area involved, overlaying with 1/2"-3/4" plywood might be an option as well?

Dragged this pile over to my place today and looked it over. It is really bad, roof has been leaking, walls are soft, floor is shot. Not sure if its worth fixing....May just part it out. Too bad, it seems like it was a nice trailer at one time.
