RV Replacement Cushion Foam

Good Day All,

I'm currently in the process of having cushions covers altered for my newly made 2106 Micro Minnie dinette. In researching foam there are many levels and I'm told the option of adding Dacron Fiberfill gives the cushion a more rounded look.

I reached out the the Foam Factory for suggestions and received the following feedback as well as the option of adding the Dacron Fiber Fill.

HD-High Quality: This foam is a medium-firm and is considered the “middle road” foam. High Quality foams are fused with rubber to provide a nice “bouncy” feel and firm core. HD-High Quality has the support of a firm but the nice comfortable give of the Medium foam. This foam lasts 10-12 yrs with regular use. 2.8lbs/cuft 36ILD

Lux-High Quality: This is an Extra Firm foam. Lux-High Quality is our firmest foam we carry and is best for those who prefer to be sitting on top of their cushions with little to no give when in use. Like the HD-High Quality, this foam is fused with rubber so it does have a bit of “bounce” when in use with a very dense core center. This foam lasts 10-12 yrs with regular use. 2.8lbs/cuft 50ILD

Another suggestion is to laminate 3" of the Lux - High Quality to 2" of the HD - High Quality for increased firmness over the 5" HD36 - High Quality alone and less firm compared to the Lux - High Quality yet retain the density and quality of both.

Has anyone replaced their cushion foam and what route did you go?

Thanks,

I had the foam replaced in the dinette seats last summer (2024) by a local RV furniture place.

Essentially, choosing the foam is a personal thing, what's soft to one person is medium to another. Before we chose the foam we have, we sat on several different qualities of foam.
For me, If I can't test it out, I have a hard time buying items such as this based on others recommendations. I think you'll have to sit on the samples to see what feels right for you..

I'm going to be watching this. I have dinette cushions that your rear sinks right thru to the plywood below. Probably designed for sleeping where the weight would be spread out more. The back cushions are just fine. I prefer something real firm.

I used Foam Online https://foamonline.com/ And bought the medium Lux foam.

Installation tip.... buy a cheap thin painters plastic drop cloth and wrap the foam in it. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck the air out of the cushion and quickly insert it into the material, then turn off the vacuum cleaner and let it expand. Definitely easier with two people but one person can do it.

I replaced the foam in our golf cart seats when we had it. I purchased the foam from Jo Ann Fabrics. This way I could feel it different types and wife picked the one she liked the best.

Foam Cushions

Foam only cushions are often the cheapest stuff out there. They are made using fillers that weaken the foam with use. That makes them cheaper to make.

Body heat also weakens the foam. So after a couple of years with heavy use, you are sitting on the board underneath.

The same thing happens with mattress foam.

First use high quality foam. It costs more. Getting a recommendation from a professional like Verlo Mattress Factory is good for choosing bed foam. Judging how firm is something you learn. Getting the size and shape correct is simple enough if you follow instructions. You need to follow the instructions.

Second wrapping the foam insert with Dacron spreads the load on the surface of the foam. Yes it changes the feel. But, it also helps the foam to last many more years.

We bought foam from an online expert source. I ordered the most firm foam and had the inserts wrapped in Dacron.

We are older and now spend a lot of time sitting. We were sitting on the boards. The replacements were far better. Maybe a little too firm. I would order the medium foam wrapped in Dacron next time.

Verlo chose the mattress foam for us. It was not wrapped in Dacron. It was just right and was still in perfect shape when we sold the trailer. The foam cost significantly more than the cheap stuff that was available.

Great Feedback. I have read the rating of foam tells a lot about it.

The first two digits relate to density of the foam. The higher the number, the more dense the foam is. The more density relates to how long it will last and its quality. From what I've read anything over 2.4 or 24 would be consider better quality.

The second two digits relate to deflection when you sit on it. The higher the number the lower the deflection. Anything in around 35 would be medium, around 40, start of firm and 50 and above getting into extra firm territory.

I only have one store in my area that sells foam. When it comes down to one store (monopoly), it becomes pretty pricey. I will most definitely have to go in and sit on some to see how the numbers correlates to what I have read.

Thanks

FWIW, I had just the bottom cushions replaced with Medium density (Blue) foam and for our use, it's much better than OEM.
Last August 2024 it was $285 to cut and stuff 4 square pieces into the seat bottoms, 2 per seat cushion. It was more than I expected but I try to buy local when I can.

We did Foam Factory Lux foam a couple years ago. Very good stuff and isn't too stiff for our butts.
