Just an update:
We went 2 weekends ago, and even with the not perfect weather, it was a great time. The site was a bit tight, maybe a foot between my awning and the next camper. But for the price, and how close you are to Salem center, it was well worth it. We will be going back again next year.

Salem can be a wild place in Oct and lots of fun. We live in the next town over. I do not have a high opinion of Winter Island and would never suggest anyone camp there but people do and some like it. It is an old coast guard base parking lot.

My wife's father and most of her family has worked at Kernwood at some time or another but it has been probably 20 years since they have.

I grew up in Salem, and yes it can be a lot of fun in October, but as a resident, its a bit much. I agree, Winter Island isnt a place to "camp", but it worked great for us since we were using it mainly as a place to sleep and be close to Salem. Much cheaper than a hotel room.

Funny you say about Kernwood, I used to live in that little yellow cottage by the tennis courts at Kernwood. I wonder if I knew any of your family back then, it was at least 20 years ago when we were there.

My father in law was the accountant for the club and had his own business. After a number of years he moved his office into a building on the Kernwood property. He was good friends with the grounds keeper, my wife was a hostess, my bil worked the grounds and my SIL worked the snack shack I believe.
