Nevada registration is high, its based on msrp regardless of what you paid. Our Phaeton in 2016 was $4200, then went to Ca and it was $1600

Apparently, this is the way it is down here in "Podunk." I bought a new 2019 Keystone Cougar 32rli. Traded in an old bunkhouse I'd had for a while. Just didn't realize it would be such a jump.

I wasn't trying to impugn any particular location, just trying to point out that it varies considerably by location. My registration would be about 2/3 of its current cost if I moved literally 3 doors down. Our neighborhood, oddly enough, is split 3 ways. Part of it is in one city, part is in another, and part is outside the city limits in the county. Each of the cities pay slightly different rates and the county residents don't pay any city taxes.
$800 does seem pretty steep for that trailer though. Your tax assessors office should have the formula available online. For us, there is a set "tag fee" plus ad valorem (based on currently assessed value) taxes. There is a formula that's usually clear as mud and somewhat subjective. For instance, ours is based on assessed value which is supposed to be 10% of actual market value. The tax on the assessed value is some percentage of the assessed value for state, another percentage for county (all residents within county including cities), and finally another percentage for city. I believe we also have a school tax based on assessed value. My registration is around $300. I think the assessed value was around 2800 meaning they value the trailer at $28K.

Each state is different. Some have a personal property tax imposed on an RV each year and this can get rather expensive. In Texas, my yearly fee for the registration is about $112.00 for the trailer and about $88 for the truck. There is no property taxes on RV, only real-estate.
Any one going full time and looking for the state to claim as their domicile, needs to thoroughly investigate the cost of registering the RV, income taxes as well as insurance for health and vehicles.

Yuppp! That’s a big part of what’s keeping me from wanting a new 5th wheel. Based off the msrp gets ya. Our mini drop was over 400 and it almost gave me a stroke. Thought it would be like a boat trailer........

Ya'll need to move to Michigan. PERMANENT trailer tag $75.00 up to 3,000 lbs., $200.00 up to I think 10,000 lbs and then $300.00 for anything larger and it's a one time charge. Motor home, completely different ball game, in fact it may cause me to change domicile.

You're nearly spot on. I'm not in the motor home market so I'm not versed on it. I think we Michiganders have it pretty cheap compared to some others here.
