Suburban Towing Questions

We have 3 kids and a dog are looking for something that will be big enough to fit the whole family but be able to tow with a suburban.

I have a 2017 Suburban with the max towing package. 3.42 rear axle ratio and the owners manual says max towing is between 8000-8300 pounds. We are interesting the following:
Passport GT 2951BH
Rockwood 2706WS
Coachman Spirit 2963
We like the u shaped dinette, the flip up bottom bunk, the back door for easy access to under the bunk. They also have either 1 or 2 closets for storage.

We also feel that maybe the above might be a little to much to be towed by a suburban. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

IMO both those trailers are too heavy and too long for your Burb.

I had a Yukon XL 4wd with 3.7(?) ratio and pulled my 28' R-Vision Trail Sport Lite GVWR at <6k lbs. Did fine towing up to 7k elevation but I wouldn't go any heavier on the trailer.
Sold that Yukon and replaced it with a Ford e350 van to carry more "stuff" that the wife wanted to bring when camping.

The Suburban is about as capable as a 150/1500 series truck. That being the case I would keep the length under 30' and weight around 6,500lbs. Maybe 7,000lbs.
I like the Rockwood/Flagstaff trailers best out of those trailers you listed.

Forest River 240BHXL might fit your needs. Bunkhouse design, 2 doors, separate bedroom, electric fireplace will heat the whole TT in mild winter weather. Second door into bathroom is great for kids and dogs to enter and clean up, not have to traipse through the whole trailer to use restroom.

Overall Length - 28' 6"
Dry weight - 5343 pounds
tongue weight - 570 pounds

Tried to talk my wife down from our 263BHXL, but we really liked a few of the extras the larger trailer gave us: Outdoor kitchen, couch that converts to bed, has storage underneath. I think the 263BHXL is the max I would tow with half ton, too much for the Suburban.

What is your payload rating?

The suburban is rated for a maximum tongue weight of ~800 or 830lbs. Your tongue weight will need to be at least 12% of the trailer weight. 830lbs is 12% of 6900lbs. You should be looking for a trailer with a GVWR of no more than 6900lbs. And, yes, that will be a bit of a challenge. Maybe a Lance 2185…

Response and added question to this thread

I have a 2011 Chevy Suburban 2 wd I am looking at a used 2010 Coachman Catalina no slides, 7000 gvwr. I was trying to do the 80% weight and calculated towing possible for up to 7400. Unloaded weight is 4230. It's just 26' from tongue to bumper. I do not want to over do it. Thoughts?
