Tire Size

I got myself a 1998 Travelaire Drifter RT190. The tires on the trailer are 205/75R14 and the spare is a 205/70R14. I had to get new tires and went with the 75. Does anyone know if this will cause a problem? I can’t seem to find any info on this trailer anywhere.

If they were 75 profiles and you got 75 profile tires I don't see what the problem would be as long as the width was the same.

The only reason the spare is different as there is more rim so the tire doesn't need to be as tall. If you got a 75 for the spare it will be taller than the other tires but probably not enough to be a problem.

The 70 is probably a passenger tire and the 75 is probably a trailer tire. When describing tires I advise using a complete designated size, such as ST205/75R14.

Lots of trailer manufacturers were using passenger tires on light trailers 20 years ago. Even today on new trailers such as boat trailers you'll find nearly 35% of them to be equipped with passenger tires.

I would assume the rims are the same for the spare and the others. A 14 inch wheel is a 14 inch wheel. The problem is that the tires are mismatched. I would have bought a new tire for the spare also. If you don’t you shouldn’t have a problem because the difference in diameter is small and unless you had dual wheels then no big deal. If you have to use the spare have the flat fixed and put it back on. Make your life easy and buy another tire.

I talked to the guy I got the trailer from, and he said that he flipped the axels to get deeper in the bush. [Boondocking] He put on bigger tire to help with the clearance. I changed then all to mach. I did not know, if I had a flat what the odd size tire would do or damage.
Going boondocking next week. Let’s see how it works
Thank for the response from you all

Wanted to add some info.
He put on bigger tires for clearance. That’s too funny!
205-75-14. 26.1 diameter 8.1 width
205-70-14. 25.85 diameter 8.46 width
About 1/8” increased ground clearance. Seems pretty small.

shadyjff1,

As long as there is sufficient clearance between the tires as well as sufficient clearance from the trailer at maximum spring compression you should have no problems.

As pointed out by 09 harley the difference is so small as to be insignificant in most cases.
