An 18" is like a lever arm and will increase the moment arm on the receiver. Nope, note for me.

Most tow bars are maybe 6" from the center of the ball to the rear of the receiver tube when mounted. Adding 18" to that makes a dramatic increase on the torque that you're applying to the hitch with the tongue weight. So, ignoring the complexities of the extra slop and the side-to-side sway concerns it would add, you're putting the hitch mounting bolts and hitch welds under CONSIDERABLY more strain by adding 18" to that 6". Depending on the configuration, the welds and bolts might see over double the load by doing this.

I had a problem that a much longer tow bar would've solved. I was very much against the additional forces and strain. So, unfortunately, I had to have the tongue of the trailer extended to fix my issue. This creates none of the load concerns, makes the trailer tow better, and gets more clearance between the truck and trailer body.

It cost me money, though--about $1200.

yes an extension derates the hitch and increases leverage forces on the tow vehicle. I've used an 24" extension before on a 6,500 lb trailer BUT I upgraded to a Class V Superhitch (truss style with chains), I used a WD hitch and my truck was a one ton DRW. I had to use the extension because I was also hauling a truck camper but I'd avoid using one if I could.

In my case, it worked fine but I wouldn't want to do it using a half ton truck towing an 8,000 lb trailer (for eg.).

Thank you for all of the responses. More info:
2400 Ram 5.9 w/flatbed. Reese WD hitch. Towing Creekside 26rls. I was able to locate a 8" extension. How much trouble will I have with this one? Thanks again. I really don't want to be a statistic.

8" isn't much; Receivers are rated using a standard ball mount length (approximately 11 inches)
