Trailer backup cameras

New to RVing so asking for advice:
Are backup cameras really helpful? If so which one do you recommend? I have a 21' trailer so how do they work? Thanks

My toyhauler was wired for one, so I spent the money and got the camera. Not sure how useful it is. It is nice when you pass vehicle and can see when it is okay to pull back in. Also nice to see what is coming up behind you.

I find on the highway the camera is useful as described above. Less useful for backing up, although it does allow me to know how far back I can go. I haven't gotten comfortable with the right/left clearance when backing.

There are "backup cameras" and there are "rear view" cameras. The rear view cameras have a narrower view, but see further back. The backup cameras have an extreme wide angle view, but following vehicles are too small to see as they come up from behind.

I have a backup camera on my 21 foot Kodiak Cub. I bought the Garmin camera for use with my Garmin 770 RV GPS. It works well preventing me from backing into things. It is difficult to use to orient the TT while backing into a tight space. The wide angle makes perspective difficult to interpret.

My Garmin camera does work poorly as a rear view camera. I can only see what is close behind. At that point the following vehicle is too close. Most following vehicles stay back so it is hard to see them on the screen.

I bought a wireless rear cam from Amazon that shows what's behind while driving and lets me see when backing up my 28' OAL trailer in an RV site. Where as before the wife would use hand signal then the cell which neither one was not reliable...sorry wifey .

Seon, I like the idea of wireless. Do you know the range? Obviously it works for your 28' rig, but I am looking for something that would work at about 36'. Also, did the cab display unit you show come with the camera or is the cam broadcasting to an existing unit like a GPS plotter?

I installed a Yakry wireless system. Very inexpensive and easy install. It covers behind and the blind areas on both sides of the trailer, eliminating the need for tv extension mirrors. They will send you a second camera if you ask. I use my second cam attached temporary with magnets to the truck tailgate which gives me a much better view of the hitch than my in-dash backup cam. To use a wireless, you do have to have your tow vehicle lights on, as the power comes from the trailer’s rear clearance lights. I don’t find the rear cam on the trailer to be confidence inspiring for backing into tight campground spaces. So, my dw still has that job. It’s about 32 ft from the rear camera to the monitor mounted on the dash.

Mine came with the Furrion backup w/ side camera system. The same one goes for
around $700.00 for that setup if I had to install it myself. It’s wireless and when I turn on my marker lights it turns on. Just plug into my 12v lighter plugin and BOOM, I can see both sides down the trailer when switching lanes and backing up it’s nice to see what’s behind me rather than getting out multiple times to check. Overall it’s pretty sweet.

I use a rear view camera to aid in backing in a spot. I used to use it on the road, but that changed. I used it to help in changing lanes, some, but I realize I depend more on my mirrors while driving, don't fall in love with just the camera while driving.
What really change my use was my wife would watch the camera and say "Don't it look like they are getting too close to the backend of us?" It is simple "what do you want me to do about it?", So now I just use it for backing.

If you prefer not mounting the monitor on the windshield, this mounting works well. Thin strip of vhb tape across bottom of monitor and Yakry provided double sided tape on bottom of mounting bracket.
