I too have a Ram with a ORV trailer---and the tail gate issue was solved with an extended shank hitch. This is the second set up like this with an Equalizer system and it works fine.
I tried that "go in over the tail gate" method, but found that it just took one time of forgetting the camper shell height (doink!!) and the one time I forgot and dropped the tailgate on the hitch.
There are some folks that feel the extended hitch affects the load rating and handling, but I haven't found issues.
