Travel Trailer coupler lock
I just bought my first travel trailer and I’m looking for suggestions to secure it while it’s parked at campgrounds or dispersed camp sites.
I’ve seen different types of locks for the coupler with lots of variations in design and of course price.
Just curious if anyone has a type or model that they really like.
Thanks

I like these locks. I’ve got one for my receiver hitch and travel trailer. I use my truck ignition key to unlock these locks and not having any extra keys to mess with. Go to the website, boltlock.com and them out.

Just remember that a hitch lock keeps people honest. If a thief wants your rig, all they have to do is throw the safety chains around their bumper or trailer hitch, and off they go.
As far as locks go, here is another company:

Good Lock

Great lock and easy to use. I like that the chains are captive also.

+1 for Ft Knox Locks. Their coupler lock is intense and installs easily. Been using one for years and has held up well. The chain hooks also nest inside the box for added security. Just buy the best puck lock for it that you like.

Hi Lone Traveler, after reading about BoltLock, I checked out their website and got excited. Imagine one key that opens your vehicle and every other padlock you use for towing!
To my dismay, doing a search for reviews of BoltLock turned up many buyers who had trouble with the durability of the padlock. In other cases they found out that their BoltLock for, say, a Nissan, could be opened by another Nissan BoltLock key. Both issues defeat the purpose of the lock.
In my opinion I would not recommend this product.

Yeah, it never fails to find another product that’s more appealing. Just like in this thread I like the sound and looks of the ProvenLocks, but didn’t come across this lock in all my searching for the lock that sounded good. Guess the big deal breaker for me for BoltLocks was the use of your tow vehicle’s key. I have a domestic vehicle to tow with, if that makes any difference now days. I have just barely enough space to get the safety chains covered by the tongue lock if I twist them just right.

I view locking receiver pins not as a theft deterrent but rather a way to prevent mischievous or malicious damage or harm by someone pulling the clip on a regular pin or completely removing the pin. I have used the BOLT lock for quite some time now and am very happy with it. You do have to push it firmly together and listen carefully for a click of the lock balls engaging in the groove, and then pull it firmly several times to insure it is locked. Many people were having trouble with the bent pin design (be it BOLT or otherwise) creating excess wear at the hole in the side of the receiver on RAM pickups with factory receivers. My truck had done this before I bought it and I ended up buying a straight pin with a "nail head" on it designed for the BOLT lock, and manufactured by Gen-Y. You buy a regular BOLT lock and pin, then install the lock on the Gen-Y pin. The pin was 4 inch so I found thick washers at the hardware that had snug fitting 5/8 holes and used these to take up space so the pin does not float around. It does what I want it to do.
5/8 x 4 inch straight receiver pin by Gen-Y
3/4 x 4 inch straight receiver pin by Gen-Y
If you want to protect the trailer, use a coupler lock that contains the chains, and then use locking boots on the wheels.

^^^^^^ I’m with Charles. I’ve been very satisfied with my BoltLocks. No issues with either lock. Grant it a determined professional RV thef is going to get your RV or receiver hitch. Guess my main objective is deterring the guy who is the opportunist looking for something quick and easy when miles away from home base. I mainly use the coupler lock in campgrounds, but not always. Always use the pin lock on the receiver hitch. My WDH is part of the ball hitch and I don’t want to be a thousand miles or more away from home base and someone steals it while parked in some parking lot. Plus the prankster that Charles mentions. And speaking of pranksters I carry an extra break-away cable.

Now if I could just get BOLT to make locks to replace the T handle/locks on my LEER topper. I think they would sell a lot of them.

Perhaps I'll just chain the tires together with some really heavy chain and leave the leveling jacks down.
