If you're talking about a map update, then it's highly unlikely to be worth the money you'll pay for it. Roads don't change much on a yearly basis for navigation purposes. Sure, you'll be missing roads in that new subdivision on the outskirts of Sometown, NE, but do you really care?
The term "chip" is just a macguffin. It doesn't really have a meaning when talking about updates or improvements to vehicles. (That is, unless you're talking about the actual computer components, which nobody on this forum will be.)
