Glass lamp shades are measured by the outside diameter of the part that fits into the fixture. It is called the "fitter." Probably the most common size is a 2-1/4" fitter, but there are smaller ones. Many places online sell lamp parts, but here is one that will give you an idea of what is available and has them broken down by size.
