Water heater upgrades

I had to pull my SW6DE water heater due to rusting and leaking. I have a new one I bought and was told it will work. The old one had the typical 3 wire main power and 2 red wire. The new one is a DSI water heater that has typical 3 wire power but multiple color coded 12V wires. Has anyone dealt with this, or have I been informed wrong? I can post pictures of the wiring if that helps in the morning.

What is Brand/Model of new water heater?

Sounds like an Atwood/Dometic

Suburban SW6DE (uses DSI ignition for Gas)
120VAC is direct and has separate controls from GAS
Gas uses 12VDC and simple DC circuit for control

Atwood/Dometic uses 12VDC for ALL controls ...electric & gas
Need 12VDC for both on/off switches
12VDC for circuit board functions plus DC to a Relay tat allows 120VAC to the electric element

Atwood can fit in space of Suburban water heater but need rewire using DC & AC

Post pictures of water heater and wires......

Suburban does have a model that has a 12v controlled relay for the 120v AC element. Its a model SW6DELC

Figures 5B, 6B, and 11B of this manual https://www.rvupgradestore.com/v/vsp...stallation.pdf

I personally would not reinstall a Surburban and would install one of the new Dometic units and rewire as needed.

I got everything wrong!!! Updated!!!!
I had to pull my SW6PER water heater due to rusting and leaking. I have a new one I bought and was told it will work. The old one had the typical 3 wire main power and 1 red wire. The new one is a DSI water heater that has typical 3 wire power but multiple color coded 12V wires. Update!!!! Wrong water heater I was advised to purchase unless I redo all the wiring. I have now found a gas only water heater with direct spark. Anyone have one?

It will be much easier if you tell us the EXACT MAKE AND MODEL of water heater you purchased. Running a section of Romex wire and possibly running four 12v DC control wires may be a relatively simple task for someone with some mechanical skills.

But without knowing what you have purchased, there is no way to advise you of what to do or how.
