What is this component?
I'm planning to add solar capability to our recently obtained 2017 Winnebago Micro Minnie 1700bh travel trailer. In researching the wiring (there is no wiring diagram, apparentlly!) I have come on this component, located on the port side, under the unit at the base of the hitch "V", inside a junction box.

What is the small square item with two threaded posts on it (black wire laying across it)? I assume it's some sort of current-limiting device, either a breaker or a fuse. One side has a c.a. 8 AWG wire from the battery, and the other has a 10 AWG wire to the battery switch in the forward storage compartment. If you know what it is, do you know what it's current rating might be?

Fuse for battery protection, you would likely have to remove it for close inspection to determine the size.

Do you have lithium batteries? It could be a shunt, which is the only way to measure charge left in a lithium battery as it monitors amps in and amps out thru the shunt. You could use a shunt on lead-acid batteries, but they generally are not necessary.

Its an auto reset circuit breaker. It protects all wiring after it from burning up if shorted to ground.
The amp rating is stamped on the side.

Agreed. Self resetting (automatically) breaker. We had one go bad at a year old and was for our hydraulic system. They are cheap to replace, but tricky to find while out on the road.
In our case, it created some issues using our slides and landing gear. Had to drive an hour and half once we were able to get our fifth wheel unhitched while out of state. Long story short, we purchased a few spares (different sizes) to match the ones used in our unit so we will have what we need if that happens again.
They range in price from a few dollars to around $30. Cheap insurance in case one goes bad while on a trip.

Twinboat is always spot on and usually first. If you look at it very closely you should see the amp rating stamped on it.

I'll have to dis-agree , the OP's photo is a Manual re-set circuit breaker . the small black plastic tab under the wire lug would pop out if the breaker is overloaded.
The auto reset has the metal housing while the manual re-set is plastic with the tab .

Henways are incredibly versatile. I used to occasionally send a student to the office to get one.

Ah, is that similar to a "Roll-Faster" non-evorgutational hitch bearing release?

I think you are confusing it with blinker fluid.
