Your essential in trailer tools?

Hi Guys.
Did a search and didnt find a specific topic.
Lots of stuff googled showing everything from soft/hard hammers to rotary cutting tools. I understand. You got garage tools, tow vehicle tools and what is inside your TT full time living, and a little about part time tools. From the top 10 to over 100 items to stow.

What do you have in your TT main tool bag when you are running about for a weekend jaunt or week get away? Just looking for a comprehensive tool bag, not paper plates or water filters. Ive got an idea after looking at google, but it seems a lot $$$ to bundle, but there are great bundles out there.

Just post a list, and dont forget the poo poo gloves Your best stuff.
Whats in your pack? Id also like to hear TT problems to justify specific repeat problems for the tools, but post it after your top ten list. IMHO, #1 is a multi head screw driver.

The more posts, Ill edit the popular list and update.

Thanks Bunch!!

You don't know what you need until you need it. We have been in the game since 2007, done well over 2000 nights on the road, put over 250,000 RVing miles on the truck, are still adding tools (otherwise known as weapons) to the collection of what is needed.

It does not matter if you are on a short weekend local trip or a multi-month trip a thousand miles from home, when a tool is needed the tool is needed.

It is not just tools that are needed, some regular spares such as a few wet bolts, wheel bearings & such wear out at the most inconvenient times & need the tools & knowledge to replace them.

The tool kit that stays in the RV all the time is my 225 piece Harbor Freight kit. It has a full complement of basic tools and is cheap enough to buy and keep in the trailer at all times. If I am hauling with my back up tow vehicle I supplement it with my tool bag that has some more hand tools like channel locks, hammer, volt meter, etc.

With my primary tow vehicle I have a 50cf Knaack 90 tool box with way more tools than I hope I need. This allows me to to maintain and repairs on my truck, trailer and RZR.

A few things I didn't see mentioned....
  • #1, #2, #3 Robertson head bits and/or drivers.....you won't tighten many small fasteners in a trailer without these.
  • Odd size socket(s) - example 1-1/16" for Suburban WH anode rod.
  • Tape measure
  • Zip Ties
  • Cable slideout cable kit (if you have this type of slide), plus appropriate cutter & crimping tool for same.

OB has almost everything that is essential covered. Except he forgot the rubber mallet. But since he’s got the credit card, he can cure that.

You’ve got a good list from our esteemed colleagues.
Like TB673, I added a 1/2” drive impact gun (DeWalt 20v) to my kit after having an issue with a stubborn lug nut on a previous RV (5th wheel). Worked great. I also carry it when I’m pulling around any of my trailers.
What I’ve found over the years with the 5thW, a travel trailer and now the DP is you’re always adding to your kit. Every time I made a repair or upgrade it seemed like I added more tools and parts. Just part of the joy of owning an RV.
Of course like OB said the most important tool is the credit card.

With what others have said, I carry a small Dremel tool and accessories for it. Plus, I had to buy a small soldering iron for a repair the other day.
Now the funny part, when we went full time in June 2019, I let these items and others go in the auction. Three years later, I need these for a repair.
I also had to buy another torque wrench, the one I had prior was also in the sell.

  • wd 40 when things don't move and they should.
  • 2 (or more) pound short handled sledge hammer, in case something needs to be convinced to move.
  • A good dry lubricant, I use a dry spray silicone in areas that need lube but I don't want dust/grime to collect.
  • Heavy Duty Zip ties (1/2"?), incase something is falling off and you need to get somewhere else to do the repair.
  • EPDM gray tape, in case you get a leak around a window or roof.
  • Tin Snips or metal cutting shears , great for thin plastics too. I had to make a patch over a broken window with the side of a plastic trash can.

I like the ideas others have put together too!
A comedian once said, " you can't have everything, where would you put it?"
