A good Metal detector?

I don't know if this the right group but here goes....
What is a good all round metal detector brand?
I'm looking for one that's accurate for ruling out bottle caps and nails when I'm looking for coins for instance.
I don't want to spend more than $1k Canadian if at all possible.

Anybody here got experience with detectors?

Pros, Cons?

Garmin makes a wide variety of models ranging from under 200 dollars to over a grand. Whites tend to be top end.

Whites went out of business earlier this year.

Please go to the Hobbies Forum. There is a recent metal detecting thread that i started there. I've been detecting for decades and have swung most all of them. Will be glad to help you find the right detector (and accessories!!!) at the best price possible.

With a budget in sight of a 1k, i have something in mind for you already....

Sad that Whites went under. They made some good stuff back in the day. I had a 1980's Coinmaster that was a very good machine. What i have read over the years was that Whites wasnt investing in research for future models and had started to treat the business like a cash cow. Original founder passed a while back and the heirs were running the show iirc.

But i wouldnt buy one now as future repairs are probably going to be a problem.

I have had a couple of detectors, and my Whites EagleII was/is the best. It is older, and a bit heavier (there is a mod to swap in AA batts instead of Cs, which I may try). But it is nice being able to tell what it is i am getting ready to dig up, as well as knowing how far down I need to dig.

Or, more important, if I will ignore it and walk away.

It is usually pretty accurate. When it says QUARTER, it is pretty much 100% spot on! Nickles can be can pull-tabs, but I am getting better at determining before I dig.

I have a low end Garrett and have had some fun using it around CGs and municipal parks. It doesn't do a real good job discriminating good from junk, but it does provide me with some much needed exercise. Garrett has several levels of models but no clue as to quality.
