At the Tampa show I asked the distributor about laying the softener on it's side when not using it and he said you can as long as you plug the in/out couplers so the resin can't escape. When you use the softener it must be upright. My bays are not tall enough to store one upright, so I thought that was a plus to these. My plan is I would soften the water into my fresh tank and then use that water (105 gal), so I would need to soften every week.

I've stored my several softeners on their side in my RV basements over 20 years. First thing I do before storing my softener as we're leaving a campground is turn it upside down to allow all the water to drain out and reduce weight during storage. No resin has ever come out then or during storage.

In use, of course, it's vertical, and no, I've never tried to secure it. If someone wants something badly enough, they'll figure out how to get it. I think that actually, many people don't even know what it is.
