A cheap tablet with a GPS chip, running Google Maps and/or Waze, can do almost everything a dedicated unit can do, and updates are free.

I've been using a Garmin 770 for three years. It is by far the best GPS I've ever had. It's much more than a navigation unit. Check the features, you'll be sold on it too.

If you're also considering a dashcam for a motorhome consider the RV 785, which we have. The dashcam is not as good in field of view, storage or super-resolution as a standalone dashcam but you can't beat it for the convenience.

Because of the front end blindspot, usually 12' to 25', having a 180 degree field of view doesn't add much. I had a Garmin DC66w installed along with the RV 785 and later moved it to the car where it provides more value to me.

I have the Garmin 770! Exacty what I needed. We keep three GPS going on trips - 770, Google and Waze. The times they don't agree is when the 770 is taking a 'safer' approach - bigger roads, maybe longer, but safe. I like to get the traffic info from Waze so we can make informed future decisions but I rely on the 770 to keep me on a safe path. And boy, out west you cannot depend on getting a cell signal. And how about Canada and Alaska? Have had Google/Waze 'pretend' to navigate without a signal for over half an hour! Not for me to depend on that, thank you!

Update GPS selections

A lot of support for the Garmin 770 but is there any comments on the newer models?
I am not interested in the dash cam as it limits the positioning of the GPS. The camera will be an interesting feature if they ever gimble the camera allowing the screen to face the driver. I don't need the calling feature as I just installed a new radio with that feature.

Another thought. Does the 770 support a back up camera. The backup camera in my unit is 20 years old and black and white. About all it is good for is keeping an eye on my Passat.

What about using the Kenwood DNX775RVS ?

Your getting a Garmin RV GPS plus a modern receiver with all of its features in one. Less clutter.

Nice unit but to update the maps is more expensive than a stand alone GPS. If it is like my Jeep, an update is 90 bucks where the stand alone is free if you get the right unit

Yes I have a Jeep JK but there are updates on ebay for it and the Kenwood available for about $30.

I need a new radio anyway so I can use a USB stick and a needed larger screen with better interface than what the coach came with.

I use CoPolit on a tablet. Like the larger sise at my age. I gets me where I going and keeps me on the trucker lanes.

RV Life app has offline GPS navigation. It also can read RVTripWizard plans. The campground listing is extensive and also offline.

Well I ordered a Garmin 770 rv with the back up camera add on.

The unit looked very nice out of the box but then the disappointments started to mount up. Even having watch a 30 minuet third party You Tube on the set up of the unit it was a nightmare. With no instructions and the fact the video did not follow the same sequence as the unit it became challenging. After several calls to Garmin questioning not only the set up but the limitations of the unit it was returned for credit.

While I might have been willing to deal with some of the lesser problems the fact that I could not select Diesel Fuel as a requirement in the vehicle profile killed it. The height clearance protection, another of the sales advantages, is not used when selecting a fuel stop. Height limitations is only used when selecting a route. An interesting side note. The Garmin personnel said all stations have diesel. One that is not so and 2 most stations that do have diesel have it supplied with an auto nozzle. I am not interested in waiting 20 minutes while that nozzle dribbles 100 gallons of fuel into my tanks.

I have used GPS system for over 20 years starting with the Garmin Street Pilot they clearly have not brought the useful applications forward with each new product or revision.

I had hoped this would have been an easy way to replace my black and white back up camera and take advantage on some newer features but back to the drawing board.

I still have my Garmin c330 I bought in 2003 for $400
Use in in my Jeep.
It still works great, not many new roads since 2003 where I go.
Heck, I can still find Kmarts!
The new MH has Rand McNally built into the dash infotainment center.
We use it just to get an idea on ETA.
I don’t go to out of the way RV parks. The Rand Mc Nally has them all at POIs

If I was buying a GPS I would buy at Buy Dig a refurbished. smart drive 61 for $119
