HF Predator 3500 Inverter generator project to add remote start, remote choke, stop
Harbor Freight Predator 3500 Inverter generator project to add remote start, remote choke and remote stop.
In my search for a low cost generator, I made the decision to buy the Harbor Freight Predator 3500 over the more expense Champion 3500 with remote start or the Champion 3500 with dual fuel, not both. Since the Champion is about double the cost with Remote over the HF 3500 Inverter.
I started looking into adding remote start to the Predator. I found a $17.00 4 channel remote unit on Amazon and an actuator for the choke for about $10.00. So far the Start and Stop function works fine, I’m still working on the remote choke actuator part. The remote unit will be placed inside the generator and I have added a switch to turn off power to the remote control unit.
I made a short YouTube Video of the project so far.

If there is any interest, I’ll make a new video when completed.

Yea that would be great. And maybe how you integrated it into the wiring.

I'm more of a plug and play kinda guy. I'll stick with my Champion Remote start triple fuel option. I prefer to buy and use it. Not buy and work on it.

This is fantastic! Nice work I'd be quite interested in a full breakdown on how this all worked out.

I did add a "wiring diagram" to my members photos folder, I have not had time to connect the actuator to the carburetor yet.....

interesting project, I have a champion 3500 now but does the predator have electric start ? if it does it should be easy. i'm wondering how the choke actuator is going to work, its either going to be on or off unlike a regular automatic choke that is closed then gradually opens. I think you'll be ok, just leave it closed until it blubbers then open it. might take some adjustments to get it right. keep us posted
after looking at your videos is see it must have a starter.

Not intending to hijack this thread, but I had the same challenge before I designed my own solution for this generator. It seemed like everyone wanted a remote start, but nobody was building them. After my success with a similar solution for my EU3000, I decided to look at the Predator version and decided to go for it.
I now build and sell a kit on eBay that’s all plug and play and has clear instructions. Super simple, just pull the front panel off and use wire taps to wire in parallel with the on/off and start switches. The wires are all color to color. The choke actuator attaches to the frame, below the carburetor and uses a bicycle cable to pull the choke. It’s a bargain at $100. You can PM me for more details.

Question
Wow, you guys really know your stuff! I don’t and am trying to learn. This isn’t for an rv, it’s for my off grid home, but it’s using a lot of the same components as you guys do. So I hope this question is ok! I have a xantrex freedom inverter and I’m looking for the right generator to use with it. My research shows that predator gets great ratings but doesn’t have a remote start. And the champion has a remote start but doesn’t get as good of ratings. Does anyone have a recommendation? Should I see if my mechanic can add the remote start on a predator? Any advice is greatly appreciated! I’m a total novice at this stuff. Thanks so much.
