I was approached by a company who has designed a spare tire carrier for motorhomes.

Does this look interesting, looking for feedback good or bad. The carrier does tilt back so you could access the rear of the motorhome.

I think it looks.........................tacky.

I wouldn't think too many folks would go for it, however it may appeal to some who really want to carry a spare.

I think Dirk is quite eloquent in his appraisal. The term "Beverly Hillbillies" comes to mind. Can they make this thing with a nice over to make it look like a continental kit? What would it do to the air flow on rear radiator units?

Yeah, I wasn't expecting to many people would want to run around without a cover over it. You could pretty easily have a local company make a nice vinyl cover in a color that matches the rig. We even sell some from adco that might work.

I would think rear radiator rigs could have an issue once a cover was over it depending on how much area of the radiator it was blocking.

But I guess my question is, do you wish you had a spare with you? I would think it would speed repair time considerably by having the correct size and make of tire with you. Knock on wood I have never had an issue, so I am not sure how easily it is to get the right tire quickly when traveling on the road.

I agree - it needs a cover, not just for appearance, but also for UV protection.

There are several carriers on the market, including THIS ONE. The advantage to the one in my link (and another one I have seen advertised in the RV magazines) is a lot lower lift height to get the tire in and out. You will need 2 people and a step stool or ladder out of the carrier in the picture above. OR you would need to unhook the toad and drop the carrier down to access the tire - IF you can get the pin out with the weight of the tire in place. Dropping the tire in the carrier may even need 2 people, especially if the spare was mounted on a wheel.
