Tabletop Smoker

Does anyone have a tabletop smoker? I’ve been looking at one from Pit Boss but can’t find the one I want in stock. Curious if anyone has one (any brand) and what you think of it. I just got a table top BlackStone that I’ll be trying out next weekend. If all goes well, I’m selling off my big heavy Camping Chef 2-burner and Grill top.

Dissapointed with Treger

I had a Traeger Ranger that I recently sold. It was a disappointing experience. It was neither good at grilling nor smoking. It gave food a very slight smoke flavor. I have an old Charbroil Big Easy Electric smoker that performs much better. I now use a Quisinart Portable grill for grilling.

If you have a grill, the A-MAZE-N Stainless Steel Tube works great. It also has the advantage that you can cold smoke fish and cheese.

We have a small table top Pit Boss pellet grill from Lowe's that we use primarily as a smoker and we've been really happy with it. The cooking surface is a little small at only 190 square inches but that hasn't been a big problem since it's just the two of us and will easily accommodate two half racks of baby back pork ribs.

We have found that we get a more intense smoke flavor with a lower cooking temperatures with a pretty pronounced smoke flavor. We've found that we get less smoke flavor with higher cooking temperatures and the type of wood pellets can make a huge difference. I've found that the Bear Mountain brand pellets are pretty consistent and impart an excellent smoke at a price that's about half of the bigger name brands.

I have traveled with the Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett and recently updated to the TREK (pretty much the same) and it has been amazing. We've done full briskets, 2 pork shoulders at the same time, and even a 7 rib roast (Prime Rib). This is a larger unit than the tabletop units but we are able to get it into our Class A basement. This unit also runs on native 12V, even though it comes with a converter to use 120V when available or at home.

Now all that being said I purchased the Pit Boss tabletop smoker last week and plan to use it on our upcoming 6-week trip up and down the west coast because that 65lb GMG is getting heavier every year.... I'll let you know how it goes. The cooking surface is definitely smaller but I think that I can still get a whole brisket in there I'll just have to cut it in 2 pieces and manage that way.

There is room to do a Tomahawk ribeye and this unit has real sear capability by adjusting the deflector below..... looking forward to trying this along with our trust 22" Blackstone (with Hood) that we ALWAYS have with us for grilling and also converts to a pizza oven for pizza night.

If you’re pressed for storage space like we are, you can use your Blackstone as a smoker. Another member taught me this.

Place a small aluminum tray at the rear of the griddle, bending it if needed to leave enough room for a pedestal grill rack to take up most of the griddle space. Spay grill rack with oil before placing food on it. Put 3 or 4 hickory chunks in the tray, and light them off with a propane torch until they are well charcoaled and will burn on their own with the Blackstone cover down. Place food on rack, and light the Blackstone, turning dial to lowest setting. Close griddle top.

Love marinated smoked chicken wings, which take about 90-120 minutes. At times you’ll want to turn off the griddle so as not to overcook the food while it’s smoking. Won’t work for hours long smoking periods for thick cuts like brisket. But for smaller cut-up meats, it’s worked great for us while camping.

We had the GMG Davey Crockett for about 5 years and loved it. Not the easiest to get out of our class c and setup but worked great.

We now have the Traeger Ranger ( the suitcase looking one ). It works well just a bit different than the GMG did. Much easier to store and move around, and it is large enough to do a 10 lb brisket.

That looks to be a pretty cool invention but all their smokers are unavailable.

I use a tube smoker with my Blackstone griddle. It works very well if you elevate the food off the griddle using a grate. Takes about an hour to smoke wings with griddle set to low. Tube stays lit the whole time.
