2005 Damon with original satellite dome

We just purchased an RV with a satellite dome. The satellite is a 2005 TracVision R5R4. My question is....will this satellite be useable...is it outdated...can it be used with new HD tv's and newer Dish satellite receivers?

Thanks for any info!

After searching, I confirmed that this dish if for Standard definition TV. It probably will not work with your newer receiver.

This antenna is very much out of date. It can be updated if you can find someone to do it correctly and it will still be very limited in it's ability. Best thing to do is replace it. It will be cheaper in the long run. Also don't bother calling KVH for technical assistance, they will tell you they no longer support this system.

I agree that the dish probably needs updating, but for Dish Network it should receive HD just fine. It is only with DirecTV that the older systems cannot receive HD.

However, you may find that updating the device and getting it to work is a more costly option than replacing it with a more modern system, JMO.

Dome will work with DirecTV (Though you may need to reprogram) but it will not work with DirecHDTV (In fact this applies to ALL rv domes, none work with Directv in HD)

DirecTV (SD) it may do one or more receivers or a DVR. (IF the LNB is a DUAL, which means two outputs)

May work with dish, May work with Dish HD (Depending on if it can be updated) but ONLY with a single receiver. Even if it is a DUAL.

This is because the dome can only spot one satellite at a time, Dish uses 3 of them. Though all non-network programming is possible on an east coast bird. I do not know which one or if the dome can dome it.

Thanks for all the responses.....It sounds like it might be easier to just replace. Neither one of us have the patience or expertise to try and work with an old out of date system.......and we can't take a grand kid with us all the time

If you can get it to lock in to the correct satellites, then it will work. If it won't lock in then it will have to be updated or changed.

We had the same situation with our 2006 Itasca. When we bought it in 2011 it had what was in 06 a top of the line Winegard automatic antenna. After several tries to use it and sometimes it would work and sometimes not, I finally got someone at Winegard to tell me that when it was built there were only two or three satellites broadcasting signals, now there are a dozen. The older technology can't always lock in on the right one. She also said that unit could not be updated, so it would be up to your manufacturer if the TracVision could be brought up to date.

I bought one of the Winegard Carryout automatic units and am extremely happy with it. I don't think I would ever put one on the roof again because of parking under trees where you can't receive a signal. The carryout lets me find a spot up to 50 feet away where I can get a signal. It receives DISH network high definition signals and will automatically switch between satellites, depending on which channel you are watching.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I have a 2005 R4 on my MH and it works great as great was in those days. I have since went to the Traveler for HD capability but left the KVH on because the Traveler was just a wee bit to large to fit where the KVH is. Also, I could not even give the thing away. I test it occasionally and works just like new, makes a good spare but I wouldn't care to use it very long after using a HD system. Also, the KVH works fine with the newer Dish receiver, 211 series.

About 2006 Dish made some changes as to how the Birds identified them selves and it caused problems with the KVH software .I had to update mine in order to properly find the correct satellite. If your SN is before 0605030477, " yr 06, month 05. you need to update. Also, if you want some HD, and the SN was before 06/05 it would need some hardware , $500 or so. After that SN, I think it was just a software update. My HD dates might be wrong and I'm not sure you can still do all that any more. anyway. I didn't do the KVH HD upgrade. Used a portable 1000 Dish antenna.

If you can swing it go with a HD system. Traveler, Carry Outs or portable 1000 dish antenna. You won't regret it.

I think you've already answered your question however my vote would be to save yourself the aggravation and replace it with the Travler. I did and I am so glad I did....

I have a R5SL in my coach that works fine with DISH HD and still works great while in motion.
I had to update it with the KVH Update Wizard that you can download from their website. If you're halfway handy with a computer, you can update it and be on your way.
Didn't cost me a dime to upgrade it.

Totally agree. The TracVision that came on on our 2007 Endeavor was a piece of crap out of the box. Replaced it with a Travler in 2010. Couldn't be happier. Soon as you have 110 you push one button and walk away to finish setting up. When you are ready, it is waiting on you.

With its 3 LNBs, all sats are available instantly just like home. No searching for the next bird like on the TracVision. Travler has 1080p HD picture on front TV and SD picture for bedroom. We use Dish and just cut the receiver on when needed and off the rest of the time.
