It takes some very expensive test equipment to decode cellular signals. No simple receiver will do it. I own a telecommunications company. Trust me on this one.

We use hot spot enabled phones and a Wilson Sleek cradle with an outside antenna. Works great. I do have many other options including a Jefatech repeater and several other options to improve a campground wi-fi. Do enable password protection if you use a hot spot. You can also limit the devices that can access.

YC1 - a few questions please? We prefer simple to use flip phones - no use/need/desire for anything fancier. We're a MiFi family.

That cradle uses a magnet mount antenna. Does it need the metal you're sticking it to for a ground plane, or can I mount that antenna in a cabinet or something?

In your opinion, would something like this be worthwhile to use with a MiFi?

We have a Sierra Wireless AC754S which has 2 external antenna jacks. Again, in your opinion, would the cradle work better than an external antenna for fringe area reception?

The antenna ports (2) on the MiFi appear to be a tiny rca style jack. If you believe an antenna would be a good move for increased fringe area performance, is there one you would reccommend, keeping in mind this coach is all glass and alum.?

Thanks Much! -Al

Al, any time you can use an outside antenna you will improve the signal immensely. As for the magnetic antenna you can put it in a cabinet if necessary but put a pie tin under it for a ground plane. Better yet, get the suction cup device for glass and you will get a better signal. Do some search on your phone for putting it into the test mode so you can actually read out the db level of the signal. My android does not have to be put in the test mode, it has a place to check it out. If the Wilson cradle it will help it. Having an actual antenna connection on a device is excellent but the light weight jumper cables can be a problem but they give you the best outside service with an antenna. I like the Wilson Cradle with an outside antenna. The connector is a decent size and less prone to damage and is not always being flexed. You can use the phone in hands free or blue tooth while in the cradle. They even make blue tooth cordless phones. If you find a site for the Wilson they will have many options for the outside antennas.
